The easiest way to solve this problem is to convert both numbers to fractions.
Rachel's trail was 1/4 of a mile long, and she jogged along it 8 times. 8 can be thought of as the fraction 8/1.
Now, we can multiply these numbers by multiplying the numerators together and the denominators together:
(1/4)*(8/1)
(1*8)/(4*1)
8/4
2 miles
The fraction 8/4 can be simplified to the whole number 2 by dividing both the numerator and denominator by 4. To think about it another way, you can multiply 8/4 by 4/4. Because 4/4 is equal to 1, you're not changing the value of the fraction. Then, simply cross-cancel to get 2/1, or 2.
