WyzAnt.com, the largest tutoring marketplace on the web, this week announced the winners of its fourth annual WyzAnt College Scholarship Contest. Three outstanding students were chosen from a pool of more than 6,000 applicants and will receive a total of $15,000 in college funding.
Applicants were asked to write a brief essay in response to the question: “If you could teach everyone in the world one thing, what would it be?” In an initial round of voting, visitors to WyzAnt.com voted for their favorite student essays, determining 20 impressive finalists. In a second round of voting, WyzAnt’s national community of more than 70,000 tutors voted on the finalists and chose the three winners.
The first place winner, Brandon LaFleur, will receive $10,000 in college funding. Brandon will attend the University of Rhode Island as a sophomore this fall where he is working toward a double major in film media and business marketing. In his essay, Brandon wrote about his goals to teach people the value of living a creative, imaginative life.
Koralie Barrau, a graduating high school senior from Taylor High School in Katy, Texas, described her eye-opening experiences visiting her parents’ native country, Haiti. She won second place and will receive a $3,000 scholarship to attend George Washington University in Washington D.C. Koralie plans to double major in journalism and international relations.
The third place winner, Nevena Djurdjevic, is a rising senior at Indiana University Northwest and plans to graduate with a degree in health services. Nevena will receive $2,000 for her essay “Understanding of Different Cultures,” in which she explains how she hopes to foster understanding and tolerance among diverse cultures.
