I have an academic (undergrad and grad) background in Japanese art history/Nihonga - from the Meiji-early Showa eras. I would love to get more proficiency in being able to talk about this or read Japanese written about art. I also attended JET in Aomori for a year, I achieved N4 there. I would be interested in working towards N3 eventually, but I have let my skills lapse since I returned almost two years ago, so I need to practice N4 and kanji on my own. I am also just interested in being able to feel more comfortable freely communicating. I have been a long time language student and have learned that I get rather anxious to make mistakes, so I want to work towards caring less about that!
Other goals would be reaching a point I could do some light/easy reading in Japanese, either manga or YA novels.
I don't really have a professional reason at the moment for needing to achieve a certain benchmark proficiency, so I am somewhat open to figuring out how I can make the learning something that feels fun!
