Hi, I’m Dan. For more than 20 years, I have helped students strengthen their math skills, improve their grades, prepare for advanced courses, and raise their SAT Math scores. I have also taught high school math in Washington, D.C.

I tutor middle school math, Algebra I and II, precalculus, AP Calculus, and Digital SAT Math. I know the Common Core standards and how skills develop from one course to the next. This allows me to help with current material while identifying earlier gaps that may be getting in the way.

My lessons are supportive, interactive, and adapted to each student. I do not simply show students how to complete one assignment. I ask questions, observe how they approach problems, and explain difficult ideas in manageable steps. We work together until the student understands not only what to do, but why it works. My goal is to help students become more confident and independent.

SAT Math is one of my primary specialties. I am the author and co-author of multiple SAT Math preparation books, and many of my students have improved their scores by as much as 200 points. Former students have attended universities including Brown, Georgetown, and the University of Michigan.

SAT students begin with a diagnostic assessment or review of an official score report. I then create a personalized plan based on the student’s starting point, goals, and timeline. Lessons include targeted instruction, Digital SAT strategies, customized homework, and ongoing adjustments based on measurable progress.

I have extensive experience with high-achieving and gifted students and with students who have ADHD, dyscalculia, autism spectrum disorder, learning disabilities, executive-functioning challenges, or test anxiety. I am patient, encouraging, and willing to explain a concept in different ways until we find the one that connects.

If your child needs help catching up, wants to move ahead, or is preparing for an important exam, I would be glad to discuss how I can help.

ACT Math

ACT Math

I have been tutoring ACT Math for nearly 10 years, and have raised the grades of kids, and helped them get into their top choice colleges including Cornell, Georgetown, University of Michigan, and others. I have edited and cowritten 8 test preparation books. Here is one of many testimonials I have received: "Just wanted to let you know that Brian will be attending Cornell University (College of Human Ecology) in the fall. He chose it over UCLA and U. of Michigan. Thank you for your help in getting him there. It really made the difference." Frank McGovern
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have tutored Algebra I both for public school and private for nearly 20 years. I have written a book, "Graphs for Algebra I: Understanding the "Y." I have a degree in Geophysical Sciences from the University of Chicago and a degree in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Maryland. I also have a Masters in Education from Johns Hopkins University.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I have 13 years of tutoring experience in algebra II. I know the Montgomery County curriculum. I have written a book, Graphs for Algebra I & II, Understanding the "Y." I am the author and editor of five test-prep books, including "SAT Math 800: How to Master the Toughest Problems," and "Math SAT 800: Challenge Yourself to the Perfect Score."
Calculus

Calculus

I have over 20 years of experience tutoring calculus, helping students strengthen their conceptual understanding and improve their grades and exam performance. I tutor AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, College Calculus I and II, and Calculus with Applications. My approach emphasizes understanding concepts rather than memorizing formulas, enabling students to solve unfamiliar problems with confidence. Every student receives personalized one-on-one instruction tailored to their strengths, learning style, and academic goals.
Praxis

Praxis

I have tutored the Praxis I Math since 2000 and have had many students pass the test thanks to our work together. I have actually written the book, "Praxis I Math: My Private Tutor," one of the only published books on the Praxis I Math test. I am in the process of writing a new book that covers the material for the new 2020 Praxis Core Math exam.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I have been tutoring pre-algebra for 20 years and know the Montgomery County curriculum as well as private school versions. I emphasize understanding rather than memorizing. I like to lead the students to the answer rather than tell them what to do. This keeps them focused and learn faster.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I have been tutoring pre-calculus for 20 years and know the public school curriculum. I focus on helping the student understand the material rather than memorize things. In my education I have taken 20 courses that include trigonometry from calculus to physics to physics lab and meteorology courses such as fluid dynamics and thermodynamics as well as physical meteorology, remote sensing, synoptic meteorology and atmospheric chemistry. I know a lot of application problems including finance and economics, which makes the subject more interesting.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I specialize exclusively in SAT Math and have over 20 years of experience helping students improve their mathematical understanding and test performance. I am the author and co-author of multiple SAT Math preparation books, and my tutoring is highly personalized. Every student receives an individualized learning plan that is continuously refined based on progress, along with AI-enhanced lesson reviews, customized homework, and proven SAT Math strategies. I also have extensive experience working with students with ADHD, dyscalculia, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), learning disabilities, and test anxiety. My goal is not only to improve SAT Math scores but also to help students become confident, independent problem-solvers.

Great tutor

I had a wonderful time re-learning some of the math basics that I had forgotten over the years (exponent rules, PEMDAS, etc.) He is kind and encouraging. Would recommend! Thanks, Dan!

Wonderful tutor!

Knowledgeable, patient tutor who is very perceptive in figuring out students' learning styles and identifying what exactly is holding a student back. He figured out an underlying deficiency in my daughters math skills that really helped unlock the reason she hadn't been "getting it!"
