Greetings. I'm Gary Young, a former university instructor and K - 12 teacher. I became a teacher out of love for people, and for clear, engaging communication. I had some wonderful teachers growing up, and no less wonderful professors in university, who were my inspiration. I've taught English Language Arts and other English-related subjects, both K - 12, and university, for more than twelve years. I have nine nieces and nephews, all of whom are homeschooled. I offer tutoring in 16 subjects, including Homeschool, Reading, Writing, Bible, Literature, SAT, Speech, and ESL. I'd like the opportunity to instruct your son or daughter. Thank you! Feel free to message me with any questions.
"Gary is a particularly clear, well organized, and professional teacher. He gets to know his students and their work well...Overall, he is a conscientious, responsible and earnest instructor." Dr. Mark Smith, Northern Michigan University.
“As a colleague and as a teacher, I found Gary to be dedicated, disciplined, and supportive, giving our students just the right balance of high expectations with encouragement, all the while doing a very capable job of helping [students] achieve firm learning outcomes.”
Dr. Patrick McMahon, Marymount College. “He possesses great knowledge of his subject area, has the ability to relate well to others, is both motivational and inspirational, and leads by example. Gary is a man of great character that I would trust with anything.” Coach Steve Ketchum, Aspen High School.

Bible Studies

Bible Studies

As a graduate of Liberty University, I took many courses in Bible including Old Testament Life and Literature, New Testament Survey, 'Romans', Inductive Bible Study, 'Acts', Old Testament Backgrounds, and Literature of the Bible. As an English professor of over twelve years, I have regularly included the literature of the Bible in our class readings (especially Genesis, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John). I enjoy reading the Bible and read it daily, and earning my master's in literature has equipped me well to help others read and understand the unparalleled significance of the literature of the Bible.
Bodybuilding

Bodybuilding

I have coached bodybuilding and powerlifting for over twenty years while working as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. My coaching experience extends from middle school and high school athletes to professional athletes seeking to develop larger muscles, decrease body fat, and improve overall body composition. All Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists (CSCS) are scientifically trained in bodybuilding and muscle hypertrophy instruction.
English

English

I earned my bachelor's degree in English. I earned my master's degree in literature and English teaching. I've taught literature, writing, reading, exam prep, and more to all ages and all levels.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I've served as a visiting professor and foreign expert of English at universities in Korea and China. I've taught American Accent Training, English Conversation, Speech, and English for Academic Purposes. I've taught international students from ten different countries, helping them improve their pronunciation, vocabulary, and practical English ability.
Fitness

Fitness

I have coached national champions and Olympic silver and gold medalists in track and field, tennis, weightlifting, and speedskating. I have been a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the NSCA since 2004, and a USA Track and Field Certified Coach since 2010. I have served as a strength and fitness coach at Olympic Training Centers in America, Korea, and China, for the Tennis Academy of China, the Conley Soccer House, the Aspen Basketball Academy, Ultra Quest Sports Training, and Crossfit.
Homeschool

Homeschool

I have my Bachelor's in English and a dual Master's in English Teaching and Literature. I have taught from elementary age all the way up to young adults, in public schools, at private academies, and in universities. I have spent many hours as an in-person tutor for homeschool students enrolled in the Classical Conversations curriculum, helping them with multiple subjects, but especially public speaking, writing, literature, and logic.
Nutrition

Nutrition

My work as a nutrition coach, lifestyle coach, and personal trainer spans twenty years. After earning my Bachelor of Science degree, I took and passed the National Strength and Conditioning Association's licensing exams including all sections related to nutrition and nutritional coaching. In order to maintain my NSCA credentials, I regularly complete continuing education related to nutrition and nutritional counseling, most recently completing and passing the Human Kinetics 'Plant-based Sports Nutrition' certificate exam. My work with hundreds of athletes has included research, writing, and instruction in foundational nutrition and nutritional interventions for optimal health.
Reading

Reading

I have studied literature for over seven years at the university level and taught literature in my university writing courses for over twelve years. I guide my students carefully through our readings and texts while discussing and analyzing the literary details - character, plot, setting, climax, symbolism, irony, and more - giving them a firm grasp on the story and its contents. This enables students to relate to the story, comprehend both the main ideas and the finer points, and it gives them the ability to discuss the readings and write about them with confidence.
Speech

Speech

I have taught University English courses for more than twelve years, and those courses have included teaching public speaking and speech. I have extensive experience in public speaking, both as a small business owner delivering our product to potential clients, as a summer camp coach responsible for leading motivational and character-building talks, and through personal invitations I have received to share my inspiration and my life story at local community conferences. In addition, I have assisted my own students as a speech coach helping them prepare for campus-wide speech contests, and I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Communications (English).
Track & Field

Track & Field

I am a former division one track & field athlete and a USA Track & Field Certified Coach. I have instructed hundreds of junior athletes and a number of professional athletes in running, including sprinting and sprint mechanics, middle distance and interval training, and distance / endurance training. Most recently, I served as a track & field coach for the Ignite Track & Field Club (Hurricane High School), working with over sixty middle school and high school athletes through the spring track season, and helping numerous athletes on the team set new personal records. I have also worked with track and field athletes at Olympic training centers in Korea and China, including national champions and Olympians. I have been a USA Track and Field Certified Coach since 2010.
Writing

Writing

With over twelve years of experience teaching writing, at both the university level and the secondary level, I have helped hundreds of students to develop their confidence to write personally, clearly, logically, and correctly. I always tell my students, becoming a good writer is like becoming a good runner. The more you run, the better you'll run. There are no shortcuts. I use creative prompts, personal journals, and responses to readings to get my students engaged and writing. I'm also a published scholar (UC Davis Writing on the Edge) and have served as an editor on two major books.

Very knowledgeable and patient

“I had an amazing experience working with this tutor to improve my accent! From the very first session, it was clear that he is not only incredibly knowledgeable but also patient and encouraging. He tailored the lessons to my specific needs, identifying the key areas where I needed improvement and providing practical exercises to help me develop clearer pronunciation.
