I’ve taught at two colleges; written and edited for newspapers and magazines for 20 years. Creative Writing

I have an MFA in Creative Writing, specializing in prose, and have been a widely-read columnist presenting personal essays for more than 20 years. I have also tutored creative writing students and have coached adults with their fiction, nonfiction, and poetry for more than fifteen years. I can ensure you connect to your readers through empathy, imagination, description, and honesty.

English

My mother was a college English professor. Is it no wonder then that I have spent my life working with words and writers? The English language is full of nuances and we are often judged by the way we communicate and express ourselves in writing. As a magazine editor for ten years, I worked to empower our writers to communicate well. As a journalist, I learned to write clearly and concisely. As a business writer, I learned to write for the audience and intended results. As a professor, I have helped students develop and present polished essays, reports, and papers. I will gladly work with you to polish your writing and communication.

Essay Writing

I have a BA in Written English and an MFA in Creative Writing with a specialization on prose. I have been a personal essayist for 25 years and can help you connect to your readers with empathy, imagination, description, and honesty. I have also been teaching students how to master the academic essay to improve their arguments and claims, better express their ideas and analysis, and improve their grades in all subjects.

Fiction Writing

I have an MFA in Creative Writing with a focus on prose -- including fiction and nonfiction. I am familiar with the core concepts of scene, plot, setting, characterization, conflict, resolution, and all the tools of the fiction writer's toolbox.

Grammar

My mother was a college Grammar professor who had us diagramming sentences for fun. She even had us help her grade research papers when they piled up around her at the end of the semester. As a journalist and an editor, I worked with writers to make sure their writing was clear and professionally presented. As a college professor, I helped students prepare, polish, and present essays and papers of the utmost quality. I can help you too polish and perfect your grammar so your written communication presents you and your ideas well.

Homeschool

I have been tutoring homeschooled students since 1997, first working with middle and high school ages, and then expanding to work with elementary levels. While homeschool tools, education methods, and teaching approaches have changed drastically since then, the core elements of writing, communication, and English have not. Over the years, I have received certifications in Homeschooling, Critical Practices for Anti-Bias Education, Protecting Student Privacy (FERPA, COPPA, PPRA), Increasing Student Engagement Online, News Literacy and Civic Engagement, Teaching Digital Citizenship, Online Classroom Management, Student Safety and Privacy, Outschool.com, Building Diverse Learning Environments, and Using Improv to Redefine Education. I have a BA in Written English, a minor in Journalism, and an MFA in Creative Writing. I will be happy to develop customized lessons for one-on-one tutoring and will also work with small groups of students of similar levels.

Public Speaking

I taught Public Speaking to college freshmen at a university for four years. In addition, I have spoken in front of audiences large and small over a 30-year career. I am familiar with all types of speeches, to inform, to persuade, to honor, etc., and I will be happy to help you polish and prepare to present your speeches and presentations.

Thesis Writing

I have an MFA in Creative Writing and a BA in English Writing, with years of experience tutoring and teaching the core concepts of thesis statements, analysis, formal arguments, and academic writing. I am a proficient researcher, with a full understanding of APA and MLA writing styles, documentation, and citing and referencing methods.

I have been a professional writer for my entire adult life. I have also worked with students online and in-person, in one-on-one and group settings, in traditional and non-traditional educational contexts. I have an MFA in Creative Writing, a BA in English Writing, a minor in Journalism, and an Associate degree in Liberal Arts.
