Bio

I am a TJHSS&T graduate with degrees in Interdisciplinary Studies and Mathematics (minors in Chemistry, Political Science, and Communication Studies, along with extensive course work in Physics) from Virginia Tech and a homeschooling father whose children test above the 90th percentile. I myself scored a perfect 800 on the math portion of the SAT and scored five out of five on the Advanced Placement tests in both Calculus and Chemistry.

I help children, teens, and adults prepare for challenging work, supplement class instruction, and review for tests. Most of my students have been in high school or university, taking Algebra II through Calculus. I helped both a high school senior get the score he needed to graduate and a college student settle on engineering for his major and life work. I've helped pre-algebra students develop the foundational knowledge they need to succeed at higher levels. I find myself inspired each time by the dedication of an adult going back to school. I've helped each of them; let me help you.

Why should you hire me? Because I help students LEARN. I don't just help the student pass; I help you or your child really understand the material, so that the next lesson and the next course are that much easier. I ensure that each student "gets it" before we move on to the next step. I view myself not as the primary instructor's competitor or adversary but as a partner, coming alongside the student to bridge the gap between instruction and understanding. I use my students' textbooks and assignments but add in the extra explanation and individual attention they require to do their best.

Excess stress is not conducive to learning, so you can expect me to keep things light and throw in a joke here and there so we're both relaxed and open. Whenever necessary, I return to concepts the student already knows well and build back up from there to establish new concepts on a solid foundation.

When you're ready to learn, drop me a line; let's get ready for the challenges ahead.

Approved Subjects

Biology

Biology

Biology isn't my best subject, but I know more than enough to help a high school student.
Calculus

Calculus

My degree in Mathematics tells you I can do calculus -- my many repeat customers (on and off WyzAnt) show that I can help YOU do calculus.
Chemistry

Chemistry

My university degree includes a minor in Chemistry, and while most of my tutoring has been in math, I have helped several chemistry students over the past few years.
Finite Math

Finite Math

My mathematics degree almost overqualifies me for this subject. I am also comfortable teaching logic and statistics, and have successfully helped students already with all the topics to be covered in a finite math class. I have written computer programs for class and for my own use, so I'm familiar with algorithms and software.
Government & Politics

Government & Politics

My university degree includes a minor in political science and I have been working -- directly or indirectly -- for the federal and state governments off and on for twenty years.
Grammar

Grammar

I am a professional editor who has spent years helping professional analysts and business proposal writers produce technically perfect documents. Recently, I have also taught intermediate grammar topics to elementary students and helped adults who speak English as a second language with the finer details of clear writing. I can help you understand the requirements of grammar in any type of document, from fan fiction to postgraduate-level technical analysis of advanced systems.
Physics

Physics

I have over twenty hours of university physics classes under my belt.
Political Science

Political Science

My university degree included a minor in political science. This required eighteen credit hours (at least a third at the junior or senior levels) with an average GPA of 2.0 or above. In addition, my full-time job requires study into particular nations' political systems to assess how their decision-making affects my nation's interests.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

Prealgebra is when students take the abstraction of mathematics up to the next level: working with numbers when we don't even know what they are. I've gotten students over that hump. My bachelor's degree in Mathematics hasn't separated me too far to remember that it's not always an easy step.
Precalculus

Precalculus

Precalculus is the hinge of mathematics. Until now, math has been about numbers and shapes, and how they relate to one another. In precalculus, we continue to use the tools that got us this far, but we start dealing with the relationships among numbers (and shapes) as things in themselves. I have a degree in mathematics and loyal clientele that I helped through precalculus and now wants my help with calculus. Are you ready to learn?
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

Trigonometry starts with triangles, but it really comes into its own when we see how the functions interact with one another on the unit circle.

Mark is an excellent, knowledgable and patient tutor

Mark is an excellent tutor. He encourages our son to work through to the answers by himself while giving him help when needed without being overbearing. Mark is willing to take the time to work through the process of each problem to make sure the student understands. Our son's grades have risen and he has become more confident in class. We are very pleased with Mark's performance and would highly recommend him as a tutor.

Patient, knowledgable and thorough

Mark proved to be a very knowledgeable Physics tutor for my daughter. She had missed an exam due to traveling, and her high school teacher was unwilling to help her with the missed material before her exam. We contacted Mark through Wyzant, and he was responsive and reliable. He helped her understand Projectile Motion during their session, and after the session, he provided a detailed summary of the topics they covered, along with recommendations for her to focus on.

Grades went up up up!

Mark has been tutoring our son in AP calculus and chemistry... we saw an immediate result in his grades which continue to improve, along with our son’s self-confidence and enjoyment of the classes. Mark is a great match for our son, keep things light and real while getting the job done. Mark is flexible, reliable and easy to work with... and most importantly has removed some of the stress from our son’s junior year of high school!

Great, Focused Tutoring

Mark has a good grasp on a wide range of math topics and is able to explain complex topics in an approachable manner. Mark helped my son understand some pre-calculus topics he has been struggling with and then helped him build on that understanding.

Excellent tutor

Mark was a great tutor with my daughter today. He was patient and explained difficult topics in a easy to understand way. We had initially scheduled a Chemistry tutoring session, but switched to Algebra II at the last minute. Thank you for your flexibility!
