About Paula

My name is Paula M., and I have had a passion for teaching for over twenty years. My students have included individuals from over 44 countries. I have taught every facet of the English language, but am also fluent in reading, writing, and speaking Spanish. I have experience in teaching and tutoring students individually, in small groups, and larger classes over the years. My strongest skill is tutoring on the individual level. I tailor each lesson to the student, using my personal resources of over 250 books, games and manipulatives. Much time and effort is always put into each lesson to help the student reach his or her goal. In 1994, I implemented the English as a Second Language program in a West Virginia county, which is still in effect 20 years later. In 2013 I taught a specialized program to help 11-16 year olds pass. I achieved a a 99.5% success rate.

I am certified in English as a Second Language, which involved intense study of reading, writing, spelling, grammar, and study skills. I am also designated as a Highly Qualified Professional Teacher, a certification at the federal level. I use the visual, auditory, and kinesthetic methods of teaching to "crack the code" of the needs of the individual student. This identifies their strongest learning style, which maximizes the success of the student. My tutoring has been at the elementary, intermediate, secondary, and four year university levels.

I really enjoy teaching your son. He is such a dedicated and polite student. I am so pleased that his grades have skyrocketed since we began studying early in March. I feel like I am very lucky to be his teacher.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been a substitute teacher in K-6 for eight years. For 14 years before that, I taught all subjects K- 12 to students K-12 to English as Second Language students. With this background, I have had the opportunity to teach all subjects. I am currently teaching; and certified to teach all subjects via ESL certification.

ESL/ESOL

I started the ESL Program in my county in 1994 all schools and all ages. I trained all of the teachers and taught also. I am certified by Masselle College and have passed the test for WyzAnt. I have continued to teach ESL for the past 20 years. It is my passion and favorite subject to teach!

Phonics

I have taught English in public schools for 20 years. I am also certified in English as a Second Language, which puts much emphasis on phonics since they are extremely important to pronunciation. I have also tutored adults and children from age 3 to the elderly in phonics.

Reading

I have been teaching and tutoring reading for over 20 years.

Spanish

I have a B.S. in Spanish, and have taught Spanish at the intermediary, high school, and university level for the past 20 years. In 2012, I worked for a federal migrant program teaching students. The job also required translating many aspects of family needs. I also was an international translator for the Rotary Foundation for an extended trip to Argentina. I am a translator for the county board of education, and assist families within the school system who do not speak English.

Special Needs

I have taught special needs children for the past eight years, including all spectrums of autism. I am also designated as a Highly Qualified Professional Teacher, a certification at the federal level. Other students have included learning disabled, and mildly impaired. I am able to connect with the students to help them learn to the best of their ability using listening and hands-on skills. Skills I have used include simplifying passages, reading to students, using close techniques for comprehension. Most students have been learning disabled or mildly impaired. Vocabulary and reading passages have been modified to the level of the student. I was a certified LD teacher for sixth, seventh, and eighth grades for a year and half.

Study Skills

As a teacher for over 20 years, I have specialized in helping special students in organizational and study skills. In 2012-2013, I was given students failing 37/75 and 74 passed by end of school year under my direction. In past years, assisting students K-8th grade in time management has been a specialty.

TOEFL

For over twenty years, I have taught individuals from over thirty countries how to interview for jobs, dress appropriately, present the proper body language, and use appropriate wording when speaking one-on-one or before a group. I have also taught teachers classes in giving clear directions, and reading facial expressions and body language for comprehension. Overcoming fear of speaking through meditation techniques has also been used.

Excellent tutor!

Mrs. Paula has continued to work with our son to help him focus and address his comprehension of reading materials. She has noticed several weaknesses that she has addressed and we are thrilled with his progress. We are looking forward to his starting fifth grade well-prepared at this time! Thank you Paula!
