I am a state-certified English teacher at the secondary level in the Martinsburg/Charles Town area. I have five years of teaching experience during which time I have taught honors-level English and History along with general classes in these fields and summer school sessions for at-risk students. The majority of my teaching experience has been focused on honors-level education. I have facilitated an after-school book club at my school and worked for RESA7's Project Isaac for three years (a state-sponsored after-school tutoring program). I also have experience tutoring students at West Virginia's Job Corp. These are primarily at-risk students working toward GEDs and trade certifications. In addition to my work with these federal and state programs, I have experience tutoring with Sylvan Learning Center and more recently, privately, for general success in the classroom and in preparation for the SAT and ACT tests in English/Reading. I am young and enthusiastic about my teaching. I strive to push my students beyond their comfort zone and inspire them to think differently about the world around them through critical analysis of literature and history. I often teach material through non-traditional, outside-of-the-box methods; for instance, rather than a straightforward poetry unit, my students work with Bruce Springsteen's lyrics in order to examine the American Dream and our country's social and political values. My students have overwhelmingly responded positively to my teaching style and their success and growth is undeniable. I am flexible and open to any times or schedules that work best for my students and while typical tutoring sessions last for one hour, I am open to alternative arrangements.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
