Hello! My name is Joseph. I spent three semesters at SUNY Potsdam studying math and engineering before transferring to SUNY Buffalo, where I earned my Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with distinction. Throughout my education, from high school to Potsdam to Buffalo, the best teachers were those who asked the right questions. My goal is to find where a student's understanding breaks down and use strategic, guided questions to help them rebuild that understanding with confidence. I view math and science as a series of puzzles; not something to be lectured or taught by rote memorization, but instead as an engaging exploration of nature. These subjects teach us more than formulas and equations, but rather give us puzzle-solving skills that allow us to better interact with the world around us, whether we are solving a problem on a whiteboard or working on our car.
As a student in high school, I would often help my classmates with their homework or test preparation. As a student at Potsdam, I served as a volunteer tutor for students struggling with calculus 1 for three semesters. After graduating I tutored high school algebra and college calculus 1 with Varsity Tutors for one year. Education has never been more vital than it is today, and it is becoming more important that we teach students how to think critically and equip them with tools to adapt and reason to solve unfamiliar problems. By helping students to think clearly about problems and improving their ability to solve them, they will achieve not only higher grades, but they will become more prepared for future challenges beyond school.
