I was recruited out of my business writing class to intern for Ross Perot’s company. My path led quickly to writing and editing for corporate vice presidents at a competing military contractor. I wrote/edited training and business development materials. Freelancing clients have included an Army doc contract for Pentagon tech funding at highest level, a major specialty publisher, and the Florida Family Policy Council.
After homeschooling two dyslexic children K-12 under mentorship of a reading specialist, I began tutoring reading, writing, and SAT, AP, SSAT test prep for ages K to adult, starting in local schools. Most recently, one of my elementary students scored 3 times the expected gains on the CA i-Ready test; we have seen 150-point SAT R/W gains.

I am a retired professional writer and book editor with 20 years of English teaching experience. I have written and edited for executives at the highest levels of government and industry, including the military and a "Fortune" 500 subsidiary. Another of my clients has been a nationally prominent constitutional law attorney. Writing about yourself is one of the hardest kinds of writing. Private lessons in drawing, pastels, and oils with Mary Ann Kephart, M.F.A., took me to a level where I was winning best-in-show awards.

As a reading tutor with 20 years of experience, I have successfully taught many dyslexic students phonics, reading, and spelling. I had extensive mentoring in teaching reading by a reading specialist who herself was dyslexic. I use many methods to teach dyslexic students, including flash cards, games, and a reading viewfinder. My students have experienced rapid progress.

My students go from F's to A's. I have taught elementary reading for a total of 12 years. My approach takes into account the student's interests, strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. I have worked with students with dyslexia and ADD as well as many with IEP's. My own children struggled with reading, so I understand the frustrations of both parents and kids. For that reason, I take a lighthearted approach with my students, as so many have come to dread reading before they meet me. I incorporate fun activities such as games and interesting books on topics the students like. My goal is that my students come to love reading, and because of that they become excellent readers.

I took the SAT in 7th grade as part of a Johns Hopkins study and scored higher than the average college-bound freshman. In 10th grade, I took the PSAT a year early for practice and to everyone's surprise--including my own--I was named as a National Merit Semifinalist. As a sophomore, my SAT scores in 1982 were in the 99th percentile. Now, I teach the newest version of the test. My students receive instruction on tips and tricks as well as content. I teach the SAT portions related to English exclusively. I would love to give your student the benefit of my many years as a professional writer and editor when he or she enters that testing room. The SAT reading and writing portions have some quirks that few tutors are aware of, even those who specialize in it. Or, they may be vaguely aware and not really know what to do. Basically, perfectly competent students can be kept from their potential on the test through no fault of their own. I tackle this head-on by providing students with weapons to fight back. I also of course teach content. These days, very few students are getting everything in class they need to do well on the test, even at the "best" schools. I save my clients time and money by evaluating which areas need to be covered and spending all our time on them. Many parents are aware that the SAT changes from time to time and ask if I am teaching to the newest version of the SAT. The answer is yes, as a professional it is my business to always keep up to date on what is going on with the test. I seek out the best, most accurate, and most up-to-date materials available for my students. One of my recent students saw a 70- point increase in his Reading and Writing section score. As a tutor of home schooled students for 15 years, it was my job to organize the students' entire setup for education. This included setting schedules, making a study area, and seeing that it all happened daily in spite of home interruptions. In the course of tutoring other students, I have found that setting up and following a study plan that accounts for their family lives, schedules, abilities, and inclinations makes all the difference between success and failure. I particularly enjoy seeing students improve in this area, as they begin to enjoy success and gain hope for the future.

Few things are more embarrassing than realizing one has used a word the wrong way in front of an important person. Another situation that makes everyone cringe is wanting to get just the right word but knowing you are missing it. A broad vocabulary is key to success in academics and business, as well as life in general; unfortunately, effective vocabulary study is not emphasized in most curricula, even at the IB and AP level. Word expertise enables students to get high scores on the SAT, ACT, and other standardized tests and to get higher grades in English. My bachelor's degree is in English Literature, and I have a few tricks up my sleeve to make vocabulary study efficient and fun.

I coach for business/Ivy League as well as remedial writing. I am a subject matter expert in writing. I was a professional writer and book editor for many years. Resume assistance
