Bio

I started out writing for executives at a "Fortune" 500 subsidiary. Later, I was assistant editor of a publication for highest level military, research, and private sector executives. Then, I edited books for a major specialty publisher and wrote direct mail for a nationally known non-profit. Magazines from "Country" to the Navy's "deckplate" have printed my work.

I've written resumes for high-level officials in the government of Saudi Arabia, the Reserve Bank of Australia, as well as directors, high-level managers, and professionals. I help executives further their careers in healthcare, education, IT, medicine, and more. Interview prep also available.

I teach test prep and help with admissions essays. I first took the SAT at 12, then was a National Merit Semifinalist in 10th grade. After acceptance at Johns Hopkins, I received a scholarship to Hood and tested out of a semester there. I was recruited from business English class by Ross Perot's company. While working and raising a family, I took nearly enough history for a minor.

I have taught reading and writing for grades 1 to executive level for 20+ years. Study skills, executive function, dyslexia, and other "hard cases" are specialties. Besides the US, I've tutored students in Canada, Mauritius, Mexico, China, Germany, and South Korea (including two Republic of Korea Army generals).

I mentored a dyslexic son through applying and earning an M.A. from Johns Hopkins and another son, a philosophical, kinesthetic learner. As a "retired" homeschool mom of 15 years, I've taught grades 1-12 in most subjects. I also tutored for Hood College (women's counterpart to Naval Academy at the time) and public schools.

Recent SAT Reading/Writing students increased section scores by 90 and 150 points in 2-3 months. Most students meeting twice weekly reach reading grade level within 3 months.

Cancellation policy strictly enforced.

I am patient and encouraging: please contact me to turn over a new leaf!

Business

I have owned and operated several businesses since 1994. I have 20 years of experience as an independent contractor. For four years, I played a key role in a mom and pop retail store. For 30 years, I have on the board of directors for a working farm.
Career Development,

Career Development

Writing and talking about yourself are challenging for most people. I help clients looking for new positions to get past those hurdles. I wrote resumes and cover letters professionally in my local area for five years. Before that, I maintained and edited all the resumes of corporate professionals for a "Fortune" 500 subsidiary. Many of my clients aspire to higher-level positions; I help them position themselves as fully qualified to begin the new position, even if they have never done it before. One of the other ways I can help is to assist in preparing for interviews. We go over questions and work out strong answers ahead of time to increase confidence. I would love to help you take bold steps forward in your career, too. Various accommodations to your budget can be arranged. Please reach out to set up details.

I am a retired writer who worked with national executives at the highest levels of business, so I can coach you to construct well-organized and clear speeches or to be well -prepared for any job interview. I have also studied public speaking, have presented to corporate executives, and have won several prizes. Homeschooling presents its own challenges. Parents sometimes wonder if they are qualified to teach every subject at every level to their children. Having professionals to turn to can help families through occasional rough spots. I am a retired writer and book editor who enjoys sharing my enthusiasm and expertise about books and writing with students. As a teacher, I have worked with homeschooled children for a total of 15 years in most subjects; I have 20 years total as a reading and writing coach. I also teach social studies/history. Please contact me if you think your English program could use a bit of fun and excitement.

Phonics

I am qualified to teach phonics because I have 12 years of experience tutoring this subject under the guidance of a reading specialist. I spent extra time on the subject with students who struggled with it and have developed games and other strategies to maintain interest. I have also used phonics to teach spelling. A B.A. in English Literature, which included a teaching assistantship, rounds out my qualifications.
Reading,

Reading

My students go from F's to A's. I have taught elementary reading for a total of 12 years. My approach takes into account the student's interests, strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. I have worked with students with dyslexia and ADD as well as many with IEP's. My own children struggled with reading, so I understand the frustrations of both parents and kids. For that reason, I take a lighthearted approach with my students, as so many have come to dread reading before they meet me. I incorporate fun activities such as games and interesting books on topics the students like. My goal is that my students come to love reading, and because of that they become excellent readers.
Spelling,

Good spelling is essential to academic and career success. Although English has a bit more complicated spelling than many other languages, there are rules and principles that apply in most cases. As a tutor of home schooled students for 15 years, it was my job to organize the students' entire setup for education. This included setting schedules, making a study area, and seeing that it all happened daily in spite of home interruptions. In the course of tutoring other students, I have found that setting up and following a study plan that accounts for their family lives, schedules, abilities, and inclinations makes all the difference between success and failure. I particularly enjoy seeing students improve in this area, as they begin to enjoy success and gain hope for the future.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Few things are more embarrassing than realizing one has used a word the wrong way in front of an important person. Another situation that makes everyone cringe is wanting to get just the right word but knowing you are missing it. A broad vocabulary is key to success in academics and business, as well as life in general; unfortunately, effective vocabulary study is not emphasized in most curricula, even at the IB and AP level. Word expertise enables students to get high scores on the SAT, ACT, and other standardized tests and to get higher grades in English. My bachelor's degree is in English Literature, and I have a few tricks up my sleeve to make vocabulary study efficient and fun.

I have 18 years of teaching experience, and my degree is in English Literature. I believe very strongly in building motivation by finding material that students enjoy and getting some fun into their English sessions--but I make sure the details don't slip through the cracks, either. One of my specialties is helping students write outstanding essays and papers that are all their own. Many of my students make significant progress within a matter of months. SAT Reading

I took the SAT in 7th grade as part of a Johns Hopkins study and scored higher than the average college-bound freshman. In 10th grade, I took the PSAT a year early for practice and to everyone's surprise--including my own--I was named as a National Merit Semifinalist. As a sophomore, my SAT scores in 1982 were in the 99th percentile. Now, I teach the newest version of the test. My students receive instruction on tips and tricks as well as content. I teach the SAT portions related to English exclusively. I would love to give your student the benefit of my many years as a professional writer and editor when he or she enters that testing room. The SAT reading and writing portions have some quirks that few tutors are aware of, even those who specialize in it. Or, they may be vaguely aware and not really know what to do. Basically, perfectly competent students can be kept from their potential on the test through no fault of their own. I tackle this head-on by providing students with weapons to fight back. I also of course teach content. These days, very few students are getting everything in class they need to do well on the test, even at the "best" schools. I save my clients time and money by evaluating which areas need to be covered and spending all our time on them. Many parents are aware that the SAT changes from time to time and ask if I am teaching to the newest version of the SAT. The answer is yes, as a professional it is my business to always keep up to date on what is going on with the test. I seek out the best, most accurate, and most up-to-date materials available for my students. One of my recent students saw a 70- point increase in his Reading and Writing section score. What will your increase be? If this sounds like a good fit, reach out to arrange an initial session.

I help students get better grades on tests and papers in American History. As an experienced writing coach who nearly had enough credits to major in history, I bring my interests and experience to each coaching session. Living in a historic house and participating in various activities related to American history for fun have informed my background. I like to help students understand more than just the facts but the story behind the story to help them understand and remember what happened and why.

Social studies was always one of my favorite school subjects, so I enjoyed tutoring grades 1-12 in the subject for 15 years.

SAT Reading,

Caring and expierienced

Exceptional Tutor

First thing which is very important to me, Ms. Gina is a kind person, patient and knowledgeable in the private, military and federal industry. She listened as I explained by work experience & skill sets that were relevant to the job I was applying for. She was able to compose my draft resume making it better. The session was scheduled for one hr. Ms. Gina went an extra 30 minutes to help my resume reflect my skills sets and experience. She's an exceptional tutor. I will use her again.

Not a resourceful knowledgeable tutor

Ms. Gina was not aware of how competitive a college essay should be and she went and wrote general comments on my daughter's essay while suggesting/proof reading. Next she went on to say that the essay needs to be very simple and very generic. Without even asking how helpful she was, she went and submitted a lesson when my daughter had to delete the essay she commented on. Ms. Gina is ,not recommended.

Pancha, 1 lesson with Gina
Tutor responded:

Dear Pancha, I am very aware of what it takes to get into the nation's best institutions: rule number one is to follow the instructions given on the application. I took your daughter's college application statements for review with less than 12 hours to go before the deadline. I spent extra, unpaid time to speak by phone to your daughter and walk her through my comments, one by one. When I began to explain the reasoning behind my suggestions, it was obvious that she already had in mind what she wanted to do. She said she had seen some advice on the internet which she wanted to follow. The suggestions did not apply to the kind of personal statements the school was requesting; what your daughter wished to write was in clear violation of the instructions. I explained that it was extremely important to follow those directions--they are part of the application screening. She began to challenge me; then I was suddenly disconnected. Immediately, you called back with a barrage of abusive and foul speech. You told me it was my fault that your daughter was yelling at you, among other choice things. I could not get in a word before you hung up. If you had given me a moment, I could have explained that my feedback was very specific to that school and the instructions. My edits showed how your daughter could answer the questions competely using text she had already written. I charged nothing extra for the rush job. Besides that, total time spent amounted to double the amount of time for which I charged. I wish you had let me tell you that the very thing she was insisting on would endanger her otherwise fine candidacy for her preferred school. I wish you had let me tell you why that was and explain why I suggested what I did. I wish that you had let me talk to you about your options. I can only hope that, in the end, your daughter decided to follow the university's instructions and do what was in her own best interest.
