ADHD

I provide study and organizational skills, and life skills coaching. I have taught the ADD/ADHD student at both the middle, and high school levels for over 14 years. I am licensed in Virginia and Arizona to teach youth with these problems. Finally, as a psychotherapist, I provided clinical services to youth and young adults with these problems for over 20 years.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have been a Special Education teacher at the middle and high school levels for the past 14 years. My primary certification area is students with severe emotional disorders. This teaching has most often taken place in either self-contained schools or center programs inside larger schools. The most recent placement was with a self-contained high school that Fairfax County has created to serve its students with severe emotional problems. Thus it was the setting utilized for Aspergers and other high functioning autistic students who could not be dealt with in the general education setting.
Dyslexia

I am a certified special education teacher K-12 in both Virginia and Arizona, licensed to teach students with Emotional Disabilities and Learning Disorders
SOL

SOL

I have been a classroom teacher for Fairfax County Public Schools since 1999. During that time I have prepared students for the 8th grade math and social studies SOLs, as well as Algebra I, Geometry, Biology, U.S. History and World History. During the last year I taught in Arizona where I prepared special education students for their state High School Math exam.
Special Needs

Special Needs

I am Licensed in Virginia as a Special Education Teacher for K-12 students who suffer Learning Disabilities and Severe Emotional Disabilities. I have been teaching since 1999 in self-contained, ED/LD facilities for Fairfax County Public Schools. I worked for 4 years at Herndon Center where I taught Pre-Algebra, U.S History, and Basic Skills. I have now been at Cedar Lane Center for the last 6 years. There I am Chairman of the Social Studies department, and teach US/VA History and Government, World History, Street Law, and SAT prep. I have been a tutor for the County for 7 years, and tutored in Pre-Algebra, Algebra I and II, Biology, Earth Science, World History, and US/VA History.
Study Skills

Study Skills

Study skills and organizational skills are regularly taught by Special Education Teachers. This is especially true for those of us who teach students labeled EDLD. One of the core differences in teaching special education is the necessity of providing direct instruction in how to be a successful student. A large proportion of the students who are given these labels suffer from some form Executive Function disorders. By definition this means they have considerable difficulty with any activity requiring organization or sequencing. Thus, it has been a necessity that I provided such direct instruction throughout my career as a Special Education Teacher certified to teach K-12 emotionally disturbed and/or learning disabled students.

Very experience in Dyslexia

Mr. Good man 1st lesson with my son was excellent without any knowledge of his disabilities reports he was able to detect his weakness and strength. This is a big deal when working with a challenging person with Dyslexia.

Based on initial meeting

Initial meeting went well, I believe. Most importantly, our child was willing and open to receive his knowledge and advise, so that is definitely a positive start. I appreciate the time taken to get to know our child and to attempt to narrow down the type of learner he is. We know our child is smart and with great potential, we are excited to help him feel and prove that he is within the confines of the education system. He deserves opportunities that his challenges can sometimes hinder, temporarily that is. Skies the limit and he has much positive attributes to offer this world.

Knowledgeable tutor

My high school age son has some learning difficulties and Richard is very knowledgeable in this area. During our first session he really took the time to see where my son struggles and helped him understand why he was having certain difficulties. He discussed with my son about what his specific goals are for tutoring and will be tailoring the sessions to help my son improve in areas Richard saw as deficits while helping my son reach his own goals. We are looking forward to working with him!

ADHD skill building

Rick is helping my 14-year-old Stetson Noah learn skills to help him thrive with ADHD. Rick is patient and understanding. He’s making a positive impact on Noah: in their first session he told Noah about the positive aspects of ADHD, which made a major difference in his self perception.
