About Caiping

As a native Chinese, my experiences of learning English as second language; tutoring college students and adults in both Mandarin and English, and observing and teaching my America-born child both Mandarin and English give me unique perspective and understanding of the difficulties/pitfalls for Americans to learn Chinese and vice versa. The key to success is to develop self-learning and self-teaching abilities and effective study methods as early as possible. It's my goal to form and turn the key to success to my students so they make great progress outside my teaching hours instead of depending indefinitely on a tutor/teacher for progress.

I had my own business teaching English as second language for undergraduate students in China when I was a graduate student. I had great TOEFL and GRE scores to be admitted to an US university with a full assistantship. I tutored Chinese for American undergraduate students when I was a PhD candidate. In recent years, I make sure my kid is at top in her class. I also teach my America-born kid Chinese. In fact I'm already teaching free because I taught her how to learn Chinese herself. She clearly enjoys the ability to master a language herself while most of other America-born Chinese kids already give up learning the language that is native to their parents. The key to success is a student's ability to learn and teach themselves. If you need help to develop such ability to learn Mandarin, ESL, or TOEFL, get in touch with me today! I offer a free 30-minute online bilateral interview/consultation/evaluation session before establishing official tutor-student relationship.

I believe I'm the best tutor to help you. I'm generally available during weekend and weekday mornings and evenings. My rate starts at $30/hour, varies depending on subject, situation (in person or online), and number of students (one person, a family, or a group), etc. Feel free to contact me for details or if you have any questions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chinese

I'm native Chinese. I had experience tutoring American undergraduate students. Currently, I'm teaching my American-born child Chinese. In fact I'm teaching free with my child because I taught her the ability to self-learn Chinese. My philosophy as a tutor is to pass this very essential ability to my students. So they'll be independent life-long learners and users of Mandarin Chinese.

ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL Qualifications
I not only was taught and learned English as a second language but taught English as a second language for many college students, high school students, and adults who immigrated to the United States for family or work reasons. My teaching was highly effective, measured by students passing competitive academic test, being hired in American families, passing Naturalization exams and interviews, or becoming more confident in living in the United States.

My teaching became even more effective after I experienced how my America-born child learns English. Now I teach my students to learn English the English way: no translation to Chinese, introducing listening and speaking before printed text, use materials the native students use.

Sewing

I taught myself to sew.
As a tutor, my teaching includes basic sewing glossary, how to operate home sewing machine and serger, and techniques unique to specific material whether it's woven, knit, denim fabric or leather. I teach such knowledge and skills in the process of student's projects which can be women's dress, skirt, coat, children's clothes, hats, shoes, mittens, or alteration and mending projects.

TOEFL

I studied TOEFL thoroughly when I was preparing my own TOEFL in 1998 for graduate school admission. I scored 623 (total was 630 then). As a tutor, I help students improve comprehensive English language ability and test taking skills. I teach students how to study for reading, listening, speaking, and writing sections and explain practice or actual past tests question by question to ensure a good result.

Very prepared

I appreciated how well prepared Caiping is- and also very clear. She repeats when I don't hear or if I say something wrong, she is great at guiding me to the right answer while still doing the work. She also has a lot of pics and slides she uses in her presentation.
