I specialize in working with teens and adults to improve writing and speaking skills, especially where creativity meets clarity. I'm a certified coach and have an MA in Composition and Rhetoric, so my teaching style is not only rooted in mechanics, but also in understanding students' unique learning styles and passions. I enjoy moving students from frustration and angst to confidence and triumph. Laughter plays a large part in learning, so having fun is also a key element in my teaching style. I love hearing stories and helping my students tell them in compelling ways. I'm exhilarated by witnessing thoughts flow into speech, then drafted to the page, and then out in the world via polished written or spoken word.
I'm skilled at helping students with all types of writing - everything from college essays, entrance essays, scholarship applications, technical writing, resumes, creative writing, speech writing, and writing for problem-solving, and even message writing for the purposes of job search and networking. Conversational English, public speaking, and live business communication (presentations, negotiations, interviews) are all topics in which I'm qualified and that come naturally to me.
When I work with younger students on improving reading, I have many techniques to make the process more fun. Reading should be a source of enjoyment and empowerment, not a chore.
Writing students won't find a red-penned revision with harsh criticisms scrawled on a page, we'll discuss the pieces and how to make each element fit together with a purpose. We'll talk about repeatable patterns and structures that work but don't stifle creativity. Writing must bring thought to life with a variety of words, so I encourage expanding one's vocabulary (by seeking meaning for unknown words) daily.

The process involves an imperfect conversation with yourself or with others that explores a menu of what might fit. By the end, we can see each other's mental pictures and neither of us is at all bored. This is the point of well-stocked vocabulary.
