Hello!

I am an experienced teacher and behavior specialist who loves to tutor. In particular, I am passionate about surprising kids with their own capability, especially if they have qualities or histories that have led them to doubt their ability to learn.

Being a big kid at heart, I keep things upbeat and fun. I love to gamify learning, invent goofy mnemonics, and keep lessons challenging in a way that feels just within reach—if the student stretches a bit. While we hit all the content, my main goal is to instill good learning habits in a way that inspires the kid to actually work them into how they approach life.

I am certified to teach English, Math, and Social Studies, for grades Pre-K through 12. My experience in education is extensive and varied: I have **takes deep breath** tutored, taught high school and middle school, coached high school soccer, run sports camps, directed a theatre program, taught Sunday school, and mentored kids through the Boys and Girls Club of America. I am currently the Head of Education at a private Christian boarding school for at-risk boys, where I teach all subjects and plan behavior intervention.

I am also a certified Behavior Intervention Specialist, with 3 years of experience working one-on-one with students with disabilities and another 4 years running a behavior support program with at-risk youth in schools. I have worked with kids as young as 3, and have direct experience supporting students with ASD, Downs Syndrome, Oppositional Defiance Disorder, Tourette Syndrome, ADHD, TBI, and Generalized Learning Disabilities. I have also worked with students from many different ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds, as well as with English language learners.

Wherever your student is coming from, and whatever they need to get where they want to go, I look forward to working with them and helping them realize how capable they are and how fun learning can be.

Approved Subjects

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

My initial qualification began with taking courses and trainings related to ASD as part of my Secondary Education major and teacher certification. It was strengthened by experience in SPED classrooms and with students who had ASD-related accommodations on their IEPs for Gen-Ed classrooms over the four years that I taught English, Theatre, Math, and Social Studies in the classroom setting. I eventually pursued certification in ABA therapy and have worked as a Behavior Intervention Specialist for students with developmental disabilities over the last 3 years.
Bible Studies

Bible Studies

In college I took classes in Theology and pursued my own rigorous study of scripture and theology, including working through much of Systematic Theology. During that time I served as a paid private tutor for a student looking to excel in their high school Theology course, among other subjects. For two years I taught youth Sunday school and served as the head of youth ministries at my small church before eventually joining another church body. During that time I served as an AWANAS instructor and directed a week-long faith-based soccer camp in the community. I am currently flying to Dallas monthly to lead the soccer division of a faith-based sports program meant to share the Gospel with elementary and middle school children. My beliefs are consistent with orthodox Protestantism, though I also attended a Catholic university and have training in and familiarity with Catholic theology.

ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I have a year of experience teaching ESOL to youth, but my most relevant experience is my years as a high school English teacher in an area with a high density of Latino students, many of whom were either bilingual or in the early stages of English proficiency. My background as a Theatre director has also helped me develop an attention to detail when it comes to diction, enunciation, and tone.
Reading

Reading

I am licensed to teach English grades Pre-K through 12, and I have put that license to use teaching everything from Senior English, to Remedial English, English for Speakers of Other Languages, to helping elementary-age students with developmental delays learn to read. Whether the student is younger or approaching adulthood, I understand not just how to help them learn the mechanics or reading, but how to spark interest, overcome avoidance, and instill habits that take reading from being a task to being an adventure that enriches their mind.
