About Hilary

Bio

I graduated in 2011 from Northwestern University with a major in History and a minor in Chinese. In addition, I studied French at university to the advanced level. I have studied abroad in both France and China, including home-stays on both visits. I love both languages, and I am eager to share my passion for and knowledge of languages, culture and history.

I graduated in 2011 from Northwestern University with a major in History and a minor in Chinese. In addition, I studied French at university to the advanced level. I have studied abroad in both France and China, including home-stays on both visits. I love both languages, and I am eager to share my passion for and knowledge of languages, culture and history.

My most valuable time at Northwestern was spent volunteering. I volunteered at Mark Sheridan Science and Math Academy in Chicago's Chinatown as a tutor for middle schoolers in the after-school program. I also volunteered as a French teacher for an extra-curricular language program at Dewey Elementary in Evanston, IL. I also loved volunteering at an elderly home and various other elementary schools. One of my other passions is running. I was recruited for Northwestern's Division I Varsity Cross Country team. I am happy to share my insight into the world of recruitment, college athletics, cross country and track training, and other subjects in that area.

I want to help fuel students' interest in learning and act as a strong role model to help students value education. I would love help tutor students in Chinese, English, French, History, and track. I look forward to meeting you!

I minored in Chinese at Northwestern University. My coursework at Northwestern in Chinese includes three quarters each of Chinese I, II, III, and Chinese Literature. In addition, I have taken classes in English on Chinese culture and history. I took Chinese III intensively at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, where I was immersed in the language. The literature course was fully in Chinese. Also while abroad, I studied Traditional Chinese Medicine and Chinese Public Health, which involved visiting hospitals all across Beijing.

I worked as a volunteer for various schools in the Chicago and Kansas City areas. In high school I led small groups of students in English and Social Studies lessons. While I was a student at Northwestern University, I worked as a volunteer French teacher for students in Kindergarten through third grade. I planned my own lessons and managed a mixed age group class. At Mark Sheridan Math & Science Academy, I tutored middle school students in math, science, English, and other subjects in an after-school program. As my experience suggests, I am comfortable tutoring a variety of age groups in many subjects.

I am a patient, enthusiastic, and experienced ESL tutor with a ProLiteracy America tutor training certificate. I have worked with dozens of ESL students in the drop-in tutoring center where I work. My experience studying foreign languages gives me awareness of struggles my students face. In addition, I have completed and Introduction to the Wilson Reading System, a reading education program that has shown good results with ESL students.

Great supportive, compassionate person!

As the school year comes to an end I look back and realize what an impact Hilary has had on my daughter's math this year. Her teacher and I talked about what a difference we see in my daughter's attitude about math. I have definitely seen a return on this investment. And not only is Hilary interested in supporting her in math but she showed support and interest in other school activities and sports. I look forward to starting our middle school career with Hilary. I have already put her on notice that she will be needed for math and this semester of Chinese (which Hilary speaks fluently)that I know nothing about. What a beautiful young lady inside and out and we were blessed to know her and call her our friend!
