Gateway Tech College (Accounting)
Hello, my name is Joe. I currently work as a staff accountant for a local credit union, and I have an associate's degree in accounting. I live and work in Sturtevant. I graduated in 2001 from Waterford High School with a 3.7 GPA, and I graduated with a 4.0 GPA from Gateway Tech College. During my time at Gateway, I was a student tutor in the Academic Support Center. In fact, I still have the privilege of working there as an online accounting tutor. I also have some experience working with local students that heard about me through high-school guidance counselors. Math has always been a strong subject for me, and I can also help out with most accounting classes. I am extremely strong with Microsoft Excel.
I am passionate and really enjoy helping students learn things that they never thought they could. I myself am a visual learner, and I learn by examples. Therefore, I tend to try and teach by using a lot of examples. I will break things down into a specific step by step process, and take away the illusion that the subject is impossible to figure out! If students believe they CAN learn something, that is the 1st step and most important step to actually learning! Hello, my name is Joe. I found Joe to be an excellent tutor, timely, reliable and patient. He put an emphasis on learning the material not just going through the motions. The best quality that stands out to me about Joe was is eagerness to help me solve my accounting problem(s), he wasn't going to quit until we had found an answer. Joe is your guy regardless of your accounting course level, or even if you're just trying to learn for you personal interest or small business. He helped my with Graduate level accounting for my MBA with ease, I doubt there's an accounting issue he can't fix.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have an associates degree from Gateway Tech College in the area of accounting, and I continue to work as an online tutor for the Gateway accounting department, even after having graduated. Additionally, I have tutored several Wyzant students in the area of accounting. Lastly, I worked as an accountant for a local credit union for nearly 5 years.
I feel fortunate to say that math has always been a subject that I have enjoyed. Math was my favorite subject all the way from 1st grade up through my college years. I have a lot of experience helping other students with math - both through working in the Academic Support Center at Gateway Tech College, but also through several Wyzant tutoring sessions. When helping others I break the problems down into their fundamental parts, and give the student confidence that they can do the problems when I show them the repeatable step by step process they can use to solve virtually any math problem!
Back when I was first learning algebra 1 and 2 in high school, I remember thinking that Algebra 2 was much more advanced than Algebra 1 was. I think most people would agree with that. I have lots of experience in helping students out with their Algebra 2 classes, and they feel very happy after we get done because they realize that they really CAN get it. Similar to Algebra 1, the vast majority of the problems can be broken down into a series of step by step procedures. So long as you stay focused on following the steps, and don't let the apparent complexity of the problem cloud your vision, the problems become so much more doable!
Ever since I was first introduced to this software many years ago, I have always been fascinated and intrigued by Microsoft Excel. It is an extremely powerful piece of software. I use Excel for many personal reasons, and I use it at work all the time. I am constantly looking for ways to improve spreadsheets that I've created. I am the go to person at the local credit union I work at when someone has an Excel question, and I am always striving to learn more. When helping students learn Excel, I will get a feeling for their current experience level, and then start from there. I try to make Excel seem fun, and break it down into the small parts to try and make it not seem quite so intimidating.
Similar to Excel, Microsoft Word is a very powerful piece of software. Not only can you create just basic documents for school or work, but you can use the wide array of tools available to create extremely professional looking publications. The best part is, you don't need that much experience to really make that document stand out! When helping students with Word, I find out what it is that they really want to learn - and focus on that. If we were to try and cover everything, it would quickly become overwhelming.
