About Andrew

I am an economist (PhD in Economics from UCLA), with over 14 years of tutoring experience. This ranges from early years of being the only calculus tutor during my sophomore year of college, to serving as a teaching assistant and occasional lecturer for a variety of economics and statistics courses. I am well qualified and have recent experience in tutoring AP Macroeconomics and AP Microeconomics, as well as a wide variety of graduate and undergraduate economics and statistics courses.

Tutoring offers me an opportunity to develop a personal connection that is simply not possible when teaching larger course. Because of that, my approach is highly individualized, tailored to meet the needs of each student and best play off of my strengths to facilitate improvement. I know that math heavy subjects can be particularly intimidating for some students, so I am fully prepared to present material in a number of ways. This is all a part of searching for what precisely makes the material click for my students. As part of the initial introduction process, we will discussion what specific goals you have in mind, to maximize the effectiveness of both my preparation work and our sessions.

I have experience with teaching and tutoring students from a diverse set of backgrounds, including many international students. I frequently will use real life examples and can provide links to data and news articles to help make concepts more concrete. I love economics and statistics is a tool that I frequently use as a part of my day-to-day work, so I do everything I can to channel that into making material accessible and understandable for my students.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Econometrics

I served as a teaching assistant for Introductory Econometrics course during my PhD studies at UCLA. I have extensive research experience with advanced econometric methods, quantile regression, Stochastic Frontier Analysis and Data Envelopment Analysis.

Economics

I have a PhD in economics from UCLA, with primary specialties in macroeconomics and environmental economics (applied microeconomics). I have extensive experience in tutoring, covering a wide-ranging variety of introductory and intermediate economics and statistics courses, at the college, MBA and graduate level.

I have also frequently tutored for the AP Microeconomics and AP Macroeconomics exams and can help with time management and test taking strategies as well as content.

Probability

Mathematics was one of my undergraduate majors and I have continued experience with the topic through graduate school in economics. I frequently use these methods and topics as I apply econometrics in my personal research.

Statistics

My most frequent course as a teaching assistant in graduate school. Since then, I have taught a course as an adjunct on the topic and tutored many students, for college and MBA level courses.
