I am interested in supporting the learning of students in an upbeat and creative manner that best suits the needs of the individual. As a former AmeriCorps member I have hands on experience working successfully with a wide range of students in literacy and writing. As my year of service was in the Wausau Montessori Charter School (the upper-elementary classroom), I also have experience being creative with approaches to teaching/learning. Not only in the classroom, but in the two after school programs I created & ran throughout the school year for students interested in learning more about creative writing and about animals.
I have no intention of being a boring tutor. Instead I seek to help students enjoy literature and writing - topics I know tend to be tedious for many people for various reasons. I understand that each person has a particular way of learning, and I will work with both parents and students in order to find the best way to support the success of all involved.
This is backed up by my experiences as a blogger and self-published author of multiple novels, as well as a Master of Arts degree in Literature (with Honors). I feel I am well prepared to work with a student at any point in their education with their writing and/or literature classwork. During my undergraduate and graduate studies I also worked with fellow students to revise/edit substantial writing assignments, and participated in class discussions with students from diverse backgrounds. Often my classmates were not Literature majors, but fulfilling a Liberal Arts requirement. As I've already stated, I'm not interested in being a boring tutor who rehashes the same thing over and over when it clearly isn't making sense. Between my time with AmeriCorps and experiences with these classmates, I am confident that I will be able to find a way of presenting writing techniques and approaches to literary analysis (at any level) that will make sense and set the student up for further success in future.
I look forward to speaking with you soon! I am interested in supporting the learning of students in an upbeat and creative manner that best suits the needs of the individual. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I worked with students with a range of abilities as an AmeriCorps member in book groups. I also worked with students in one-on-one reading sessions. I've helped friends from around the world with their reading comprehension.
I have had about 10 years of private instruction with a Professor Emeritus of Music Bill Day, and taught lessons on his behalf preparing a group of students for Solo & Ensemble. Both students participating went on to State, and did well there. I have also had private instruction in Piano from a young age, and have experience with violin, flute, and acoustic guitar, which gives me a more rounded perspective on teaching vocal music.
I am a self-published author of two novels with a third on the way. I have achieved high grades on academic essays through high school, undergrad and graduate school. I also recently completed a 20,000 word dissertation to complete my Master's Degree in Literature. In addition I write for my own blog, which gets steady traffic from viewers and positive feedback on a regular basis. I have also worked with international students on their writing for a range of subjects, including Psychology, Archaeology and Film Studies.
