I am endlessly fascinated by languages and literatures and the varied and complex perspectives and philosophies they open us up to. I dedicated over a decade of my life to academic literary study, earning a Bachelor's from Vassar College, a Master's in Humanities from NYU, and a Master's from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in pursuit of a Comparative Literature PhD, with teaching assistant experience from 2015-2020 in literature, folklore, communication arts, and Russian language.

I am endlessly fascinated by languages and literatures and the varied and complex perspectives and philosophies they open us up to. I dedicated over a decade of my life to academic literary study, earning a Bachelor's from Vassar College, a Master's in Humanities from NYU, and a Master's from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in pursuit of a Comparative Literature PhD, with teaching assistant experience from 2015-2020 in literature, folklore, communication arts, and Russian language.

It was this that led me to tutoring as I realized that the most rewarding parts of my job came when I was working with students one-on-one during my office hours - something that allowed us to delve into the subject more deeply, with more thought and thoroughness than a 50-minute class in a group of 25 would allow. Most often, these discussions were fueled by questions - why would the author suddenly go on this particular tangent? what implications does this have? how does a certain perspective shed light on other texts? With the guidance of such questions, we would uncover students' own unique readings and theories and the spark by the end of the discussion left us both excited about the work they were doing and where it would lead. Moreover, it left students with the urge to keep questioning, and thus to widen their views, unveil new potentialities, and engage with the worlds they encounter (literary or otherwise!) more actively and attentively than before - which is, to me, the pinnacle of what academic study can offer. I look forward to sharing this experience with others!

My speciality in Comparative Literature rests on a solid foundation of ancient Greek culture, particularly ancient Greek philosophy and literature. Aside from the in-depth study of these fields in graduate-level readings for my Comparative Literature degree, I've also taken an undergraduate course in Ancient Greek Warfare (including readings by Herodotus and Thucydides), a graduate course on the Ancient Epic (with both The Iliad and the Odyssey), and Reading Knowledge of Ancient Greek. I am also well-versed in ancient Greek and Roman mythology (starting with extensive reading of myths in childhood to working with the literature inspired by those myths in my academic studies) as well as in ancient Greek and Roman sculpture and pottery (stemming from a love of art and museums).

As a university-level teaching assistant in Comparative Literature, Communication Arts, and Folklore Studies, I've helped many of my students improve various aspects of their writing (including but not limited to grammar, clarity, and organization). I've worked with students from the U.S. as well as international students, and am comfortable teaching students with various levels of English. As a teaching assistant for Beginning Russian, I am also familiar with explaining a language in terms of its structure, and can transfer this knowledge to help explain grammatical concepts from English. I will also be able to contribute my editing experience from a graduate school journal and a non-profit internship, which requires a keen eye for detail and solid knowledge of grammar.
