Hello! Thanks for taking the time to read this profile. Teaching English writing and revision strategies is immensely satisfying work for me which is great because I've been doing it for four years going on five. Effective communication is crucial to my style in tutorials--I constantly check to make sure clients are understanding my suggestions, explanations, and the work itself. I can guarantee that through working with me, you will improve your understanding of reading and writing regardless of the style or subject matter. I'm a very patient teacher and am happy to work on any part of the writing process with clients, be it brainstorming and outlining, researching and writing, or revising and grammar revision.

I began writing tutoring during my undergraduate studies in English and Psych by working with many ESL students and those with low competency in English writing. After that, I became an assistant director of a university writing center where tutored as well has hired, trained, and supervised other writing tutors. During that time I earned my master's in writing as well, co-taught a tutor training course, and led grammar workshops. I've presented at several national conferences on contemporary methods and research in the field of writing tutoring.

In my current role, I train and coordinate over 80 tutors at a time. Through evaluating my tutors, I've been able to deepen my understanding of great tutoring methodology, and now have skills on how to match tutoring style to the client's needs.

There isn't a way for me to emphasize how much I love seeing clients develop a sense of confidence in their writing skills. It is my goal to leave students with lessons that will stick with them even when I'm not in the room. Please contact me and share some information about your writing needs, and I will develop schedules and lessons to help you specifically with whatever support you're looking for.

Approved Subjects

English

English

I have earned both my master's in English Curriculum and Development and in Writing. For the past 5 years I have taught 9th grade English and creative writing at a public high school.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

The earliest clients I ever had were primarily ESL speakers, and they were a pleasure to work with. Motivated and clever, they taught me much about the tutoring process, and I love working with students and individuals studying English as their second, third, or fourth language. I have a solid background in many part of English, and all of those are useful as I cover with clients the intricacies of English reading, writing, and speaking. The highest compliment I've ever received while tutoring was when a native Finnish speaker, who was scared of writing English at the beginning of the semester, told me that at the end she wanted to write a novel in English.
Grammar

Grammar

Of course, a good writing tutor needs to have a solid understanding of grammatical concepts. During my master's program I taught a grammar workshop covering a vast array of topics. I am confident showing and explaining grammatical rules to clients, and have several ways to help them practice, both in and out of the session. We then can easily work to methodically improve their grammar in all of their writing.
Literature

Literature

After taking four years of honors English courses in high school, and then earning a college degree in English and literature, I have a solid background in the classics and am practiced at literary analysis, setting up theses, and finding supporting evidence.
Proofreading

Proofreading

Studying writing entails a lot of proofreading. Through attending many writing workshops, I have honed the skill of offering critiques to writer's work while being gentle, informative, and also offering positive suggestions for improvement. I am happy to work on both proofreading a clients work on my own or teaching them proofreading techniques so they can apply them to their own work. The skill is immensely valuable and applies both in the academic world and the professional one.
Writing

Writing

As a published book reviewer, short story writer, and after earning a bachelor's in English and a master's in writing, I have a lot of practice developing ideas on paper. I'm confident with helping writers with any part of the writing process regardless of the subject being written about. I have also spent a lot of time coaching writing tutors on helping clients while not overshadowing their voice, so my clients can rest assured that the work will be their own, although after several tutorials they will have more confidence with whatever areas of concern we cover.
