About Megan

Greetings!

I'm a High School English teacher with several years experience in teaching grades 6-12 as well as an NCATE teaching licence. Some of the classes I have taught/am teaching include: Acting Lab, American Literature, Creative Writing, English 9, Honors English 9, English Survey, English 10, Greek Mythology, Honors Composition, Senior Composition, Language Arts, Media (Newspaper), Mythology of the Hobbit, and I have co-taught AP Lang.

I'm passionate about the subject in all its forms from writing to reading and from speaking to creating! If you're looking for a better understanding of Shakespeare, gaining confidence in giving speeches, or just help with English related items like proofreading or thematic instruction, you have come to the right place.

I also specialize in ACT tutoring, from preparing to take it the first time, to improving a first attempt score between tests. I focus on the English, Reading, and Writing portions of the test. I use proven methods and strategies to give students the tools they need to succeed and achieve the scores they want for college entrance or personal goals. For the Math and Science portions of the exam I work with another tutor whom I would be happy to recommend.

An ACT student's parent left the following review about our time together - "Megan tutored my daughter in both English and Reading for the ACT, improving her overall composite score by 5 points, which included significant increases in both areas. Megan was flexible, easy to work with and my daughter enjoyed the time they spent together. I appreciated the fact that Megan identified quickly the areas that should be focused on and worked on improving those as well as her flexibility in scheduling and ability to connect through Skype in order to easily fit into the rest of my daughter's schedule. Overall, I highly recommend Megan and will not hesitate to connect with her again if needed for another child." (Kim S., Brookfield, WI)

A little more about me - I have an undergrad degree in English with a minor in Creative Writing and Rhetoric, and am finishing my Master's in Education this summer. I also coach Basketball and Equestrian and assist at Track meets and as a substitute teacher - basically, I love English and working with young minds in a variety of settings!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have run an ACT prep course for two years, and privately tutored for English, Reading, and Writing sections of the ACT for the past year.

ACT Reading

I have taught an ACT prep course for high schools students taking the ACT for college the past 2 years (2016, 2017). The courses focused on tips, tricks, breaking down questions, and help with everything from the essay portion of the ACT to how to be a better overall reader and time manager.

Basketball

I have been coaching girl's basketball for a number of years, including 7th grade and JV levels. In both of these levels I implemented a mix of strength and cardio training along with a comprehensive drill program and scrimmages to both improve skills, build team work, and lead the teams to stronger performances. JV ended the year with a winning record.

English

So far, I have 4 years experience as a 6-12 English teacher, mainly in high school in the public system of Wisconsin. I have focused on areas such as Freshman transitioning to high school, electives for Juniors and Seniors, college level courses for Seniors and Honors students, as well as other areas such as 7th grade Language Arts. Besides work experience, I also have an Undergrad from UWL in English!

Literature

Not only am I an avid reader, Literature was one of the main components of my Undergrad in English from UWL - the study of it, reading, comprehension, and dissection of a multitude of works. I also teach literature regularly as a high school English teacher, so I have a passion for it!

Proofreading

I am an avid writer, and take pride in my proofreading skills. I also had an internship at the UWL Lantern, a newspaper for the Campus and Alums, and I underwent training in proofreading through my teaching program - I like doing it! I am available to proofread letters, essays, novels, short stories - whatever you need! I like editing anything written!

Writing

With a minor in Creative Writing, teaching a year of Creative Writing, and a novel in the works, I very much believe in the power of writing and how it can advance your personal and professional life. Nothing we do doesn't involve some sort of writing. I am also able to help with academic writing, such as Thesis papers, journalism articles, History papers, and so on. If you'd like to see some of my work, just ask.
