Hi, I'm Meryem! I hold an M.A. in Philosophy from University of Wisconsin–Madison and a B.A. in Philosophy with a minor in Politics and Ethics from University of Houston. My teaching journey began eleven years ago right here on Wyzant, and over the years, I've worked with a wide range of learners--including high school students, undergraduates, and adult learners in both classroom and one-on-one settings. I currently teach philosophy and ethics courses at Southern New Hampshire University, helping students grow as thinkers as they grapple with philosophical questions and discover their own ideas and voice in the process.

Throughout my career, I've taught students in both classroom and individualized settings, designing and leading courses, facilitating discussion sections, and developing tailored learning plans for learners with different goals and learning profiles. My approach is rooted in the belief that each of us possesses an innate capacity to experience the flow and joy of learning far more topics than we might initially realize. I think of good instruction as a form of translation: you can explain something beautifully, but if you're not speaking in the learner's language--the way their mind naturally processes information--it simply won't land. One-on-one tutoring allows us to discover that shared language together, and once we do, concepts that once felt inaccessible suddenly click into place.

My aim is to make philosophy and writing accessible and genuinely engaging. I approach our sessions with subject matter expertise and an understanding of students’ needs and goals. When we feel seen and supported in our unique learning styles, we can all grow in our desired subject areas while simultaneously cultivating confidence in our intellectual strengths.

If you are interested in working together, I would love to hear from you! You can reach out with any questions or to book a 15-minute consultation to see whether I would be a good fit. I’ll reply to all messages within the same business day.

College Counseling

College Counseling

For over a semester now, I have worked as an assistant college counselor at my old high school, where I was asked to help students prepare for the tough process of college applications. I am very acquainted with writing application and/or scholarship essays for I have recently gone through the process myself, and I have insight on the key-points the admissions staff are looking for in a successful essay. I am also experienced in constructing material to go over during admission internships, or writing successful resumes. I can be of help to students who aren't yet sure what field they want to expand in, or don't have much of an idea on what college they would like to go in to. I can make this process fun and reflective, and I will try to do my best in finding the exact places a student would want to apply to, while together figuring out their areas of interest.
Philosophy

Philosophy

I am a senior at the top of my class majoring in philosophy and I aim to be a philosophy professor. Next year, I aim to pursue a doctoral degree in the field. I also have graduate level experience as I've taken graduate seminars alongside masters students. I have and will attend intensive seminars in philosophy, and have attended professional conferences in the field.

Very Patient and Knowledgeable Tutor!

I have had a few sessions with Meryem so far and she is awesome! She knows so much about grammar, spelling, and punctuation! She also knows a lot about writing essays and writing in general. Thanks to her I got a one hundred on my five paragraph analytical essay! She is always prepared for a tutoring session and is always on time. She is extremely nice and a comfortable person to be around. So far I have only needed help with English writing class, but if I need help with a history paper I know that she is very knowledgeable about that too. She's great a proof reading and going through an essay to look for ways to make it look and sound better. I know that she tutors other areas as well so don't hesitate to set an appointment with her!
