Hi, I'm Sam! I graduated from UW-Madison with a degree in Rehabilitation Psychology and certificates in Educational Policy and Education & Educational Services. I completed my last year and a half of undergrad during the COVID-19 pandemic, and I'm currently pursuing a master's degree in Sociology through Arizona State University's online program. Through these experiences, I've become comfortable with online learning and teaching. As a Restorative Justice practitioner, I value not only the academic gains that come from tutoring but also the relational connections that occur from working closely with another human. While centering content, I also provide a safe, welcoming environment that fuels questioning and insight and fosters personal growth.
With over 10 years of work experience in elementary and middle schools, youth sports, and camps for youth with disabilities, I have the background and confidence to support young people and their life journeys. During my undergraduate studies, I tutored local high school students in social studies and English, as well as international students in writing at the university. From classroom-sized groups of 25 students to small groups and one-on-ones, I co-create lesson plans with students to center their needs and individual learning styles. Plans can include, but are not limited to, individual practice time, direct instruction, inclusion of videos or other online learning materials, and dialogue on the subject.
My experience has shown me that connection, understanding, and trust are values worth centering tutoring around to create the best environment for each student to grow. My sessions are fun, interactive, and, most importantly, grounded in my students' needs.
