I have been a licensed teacher teaching in the sciences at the middle and high school levels for nine years in four different states and two other countries outside of the US. Students have ranged from 8-18 years old and I have taught in classroom settings, outdoor naturalist settings, and one on one tutoring settings. My background is a BA from Lawrence University where I majored in biology and took education classes to be able to complete the broad field sciences teaching certificate. Although I didn't major in Chemistry I took several Chemistry classes in college and taught high school level Chemistry for two years in the classroom setting.
My approach to teaching is to learn the goals of the students I am working with and help them take ownership of their learning by having them explain how they would like to meet these goals. I also check in with my students to see how they are emotionally. Both the ownership and check-ins help make students feel more motivated and cared for which increases the likelihood that the student will develop content knowledge and skills they need academically.
I am a very patient person and experienced in adapting my tutoring to fit different learning modalities and barriers. I believe that returning to the fundamentals of a science is often useful for building an understanding of more complicated ideas and concepts, which I implement in my tutoring practice. Let me know if you have any questions, looking forward to working with you!
