Julian has many fantastic things going for him as a tutor. 1. he is a native speaker with a wide range of interests who knows and understands many subtleties of the German language, in various (mostly humanistic) areas. 2. With his teaching experience he must be able to relate to all sorts of students: I know from our conversation (in German:) how many different students he has taught. But I also say this from my experience: I am not a typical student, because my knowledge is all over the place due to the lack of formal schooling in German: I still need to get tutored about basic grammar, sometimes about more advanced grammar, and in yet other cases I am curious about synonyms or complex expressions. In all of these occasions he is right on target, never failing to recognize what type of input I need. He figures it out even when I am confused about my own question. 3. He has a great personality, that you will only see when you try him.

Julian spent months helping prepare my daughter for German university entrance exams while she was living in Berlin. He consulted with us and with her carefully and was as much a coach as teacher, encouraging and motivating her as much as teaching her my daughter. He understood that learning and retention of information depended on building her confidence as much as her grammar skills and vocabulary.
