Bio

I am currently looking for some new students to join my team.

For 35 years, I taught all forms of reading and writing and held student conferences allowing one-on-one instruction. I taught students from preschool through eighth grade, mostly in upper grades. During my teaching, I found one-on-one instruction to be the most effective.

For 35 years, I taught all forms of reading and writing and held student conferences allowing one-on-one instruction. I taught students from preschool through eighth grade, mostly in upper grades. During my teaching, I found one-on-one instruction to be the most effective.

In retirement, tutoring is a perfect fit to continue my love of working one-on-one with students. I now tutor students from early elementary to adult in reading and writing, teaching components of English and grammar through writing.

I relish the opportunity to develop students' reading, writing, and language; the foundations for all education. While I work with students, I form a connection as I assess each student's current level. I meet students at their level and work from there, using modeling and supported practice until each student is comfortable. Next, I step back, giving more responsibility to the student, but still guiding as needed. Finally, I have the student complete the task independently, assessing if any skills still need work. There is no set way to work with students because each student is different; each student has different needs, and each student learns differently. Therefore, how I work with each student is different.

My goal is to instill and deepen a love of reading and writing in as many students as possible by expanding their comfort levels and skills. I know how to break down tasks, so they are more manageable. I recognize ways to make connections for students to make tasks understandable.

I taught English Language Arts for 35 years. The English language is multifaceted with many concepts and can be difficult for students to grasp. Therefore it is important to find many different ways to present the concepts. I found directly presenting concepts and then having students use them in their own writing or find them in texts they were reading to work very well. I also found it important to wrap back around to concepts that had been presented earlier in the year. Now that I am tutoring, I am using those same techniques, but I have the advantage of being able to meet the student at the exact level he or she is and grow the learning from there.

Literature I taught reading and literature as part of my course load for 35 years. I was also involved in the novel selection committee for my grade level. I worked closely with our school librarian to use both new literature, as it became available, as well as classics. Due to my extensive work in reading and literature instruction, I have many techniques and materials to aide in instruction to help bring a student up to grade level, enrich a student's understanding or to prepare a student for an important test.

I taught reading as part of my course load for 35 years. I was also involved in curriculum writing for reading. For the past 10 years, I wrote a program and daily lessons for the entire grade level and instructed all the grade level teachers how to execute the lessons. Due to my extensive work in reading instruction, I have many techniques and materials to aide in instruction to help bring a student up to grade level, enrich a student's understanding or to prepare a student for an important test.

I taught English Language Arts for 35 years and worked on many writing curriculum committees during those years. Writing was one of my favorite things to teach in the classroom. I also taught creative writing summer school. I taught all forms of writing in the classroom, often through writing workshop. I held writing conferences with students allowing more one-on-one instruction opportunities. Due to my many years of teaching and curriculum writing, I have a vast array of materials and methods to draw on in my tutoring. I am now a writing tutor with students who have been finding success under my instruction.

Knowledgeable and organized teacher

My daughter has been had writing/reading lessons with Jill for a few months. Jill is very organized and prepared tutor. I liked that she prepares and sends the plans of lesson every week so that we can take a look before lesson. And she is very patient teacher who listens to kids and knows how to respond to them. Phenomenal tutor!

Ms. Jill Bottum is very knowledgeable, patient, and responsible! We are very happy to find her on Wyzant! My son is in 8th grade. He had three writing lessons with Ms. Jill Bottum so far and we already see a big improvement in his writing. Ms. Jill Bottum started the lessons by analyzing an argumentative essay my son wrote. She then shared the instructive materials, customized the lessons, and designed the homeworks according to the weak areas in the writing. She helped to divide the big writing task into many small tasks so it is not as intimidating as it seems and therefore encourages patience and confidence to work on it. We are also impressed with the way Ms. Jill Bottum organizes the lesson materials where she has one document with all the clear points and the links to all detailed documents which make the later review very easy. In addition, we like the way she follows though and make sure that the key points taught in the lessons are reflected in the improved writing/homework and the important skills are mastered and applied in new writing. Moreover she set the high standard for the writing homework and is persistent on achieving it. We will continue the lessons and strongly recommend her!

Knowledgeable and experienced teacher

My daughter Stephanie has had 4 classes with Ms Jill and really liked her classes. Ms Jill always came to classes with well-prepared material, which she also sent to me so that I can either print it out or download it beforehand. She kept the class focused on the topic and held my daughter's attention for the entire class. She also gave homework assignment. My daughter doesn't know how to type on a computer yet so she did the homework on a paper and then I sent the picture back to Ms Jill. Ms Jill took the effort to retype all these homework in a google doc before the meeting and then reviewed the homework with my daughter during the meeting. I think Ms Jill is an experienced teacher and will highly recommend anyone who wants to find a private English tutor.

Assessment is prudent

On the first lesson Jill started with an ELA assessment of my 11 year old daughter . I was happy because I felt confident that she was starting her tutoring at a level that would be right for her. Jill also told me that she would go up a notch so my daughter would be challenged. My daughter feels comfortable with Jill.
