I am a retired professor and public school teacher with many years' experience teaching students in classroom settings and privately, one-to-one. I have worked recently as an Upward Bound tutor in area high schools and as a tutor for elementary and middle school students. I enjoy working with students of all ages. I've also worked with students with a range of needs, including learning disabilities, test anxiety, ASD and ADHD students, and students who have fallen behind in traditional academic settings due to illness or other life circumstances. I am patient, consistent, caring, and encourage and reward my students' persistence. I am adept at assessing students' proficiency in literacy, math, and general study skills and can tutor in reading, writing, math, social studies, and science. I look forward to having a conversation about your needs or your child's needs.

Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a B.A.S in elementary education, a master's in literacy with an emphasis in remedial mathematics. I also have a PhD in Education with 30 years teaching and recent tutoring experience. As a licensed K-8 teacher I am expert in assessment and prescriptive teaching and can guarantee student progress in reading, writing, mathematics, and other content areas. I have stellar references. Children find my approach engaging and motivating. I'm infinitely patient and I encourage students (gently and persistently) to succeed, creating tangible, reasonable, academic goals with my students and documenting their hard work and progress with them. I use games and physical activities, music, and hands on materials to teach. I have a fabulous library of books and learning materials for students at all levels. I have experience working with students who struggle academically, including students who have learning disabilities. I also have experience tutoring gifted children. I strongly believe every child has talent that can be developed and I work carefully to build on each individual's academic strengths, interests. I quickly assess independence levels of students moving them toward responsibility for their own learning. I LOVE tutoring and teaching small groups. I'm a retired teacher who is high energy and young at heart and who recently moved from the Cities with my husband.
Reading

Reading

I have a master's in reading and a PhD in education. I have served on the faculty of Hamline University as a K-12 reading assessment teacher trainer. I have also supervised pre-K - high school teachers and reading specialists for UW-River Falls and the University of Idaho.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I have more than 10 years of experience teaching content-based study skills to high school and college students. I worked as a study skills counselor in the Tutoring and Academic Assistance Center at the University of Idaho for three years where I taught test taking skills, study skills, time management skills, and reading skills to undergraduate college students and graduate students. I also taught summer study skills courses through the University of Idaho College of Education for Upward Bound high school students and for the program "Early Start" for high school students. I incorporated study skills instruction as an elementary teacher and middle school teacher. I have a master's degree and PhD which included extensive training in helping under-achieving students reach their academic potential. I also worked as an Upward Bound study skills tutor for Forward Service Corporation in Northwestern Wisconsin where I worked with freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors who struggled with study skills including test taking, time management, note-taking, English, reading, and writing. I am able to quickly assess students' strengths and skill levels and tutor prescriptively based on each student's individual needs.
