Hi, my name is Mel, and I am a licensed Special Education Teacher with about 15 years of experience supporting elementary students with a wide range of learning, behavioral, emotional, and executive functioning needs. I have a background in psychology, child and adolescent studies, autism support, behavioral intervention, and K–12 special education. I specialize in helping students who may feel frustrated, overwhelmed, behind, or unsure of themselves become more confident and independent learners.
My teaching style is patient, encouraging, structured, and flexible. I believe students learn best when they feel safe, respected, and understood. I break skills into smaller steps, use visuals and examples, and adjust my approach based on how each student learns. I have experience supporting students with reading, writing, math, comprehension, phonics, social-emotional learning, study skills, organization, and behavior regulation. I also work well with students who need help staying focused, building confidence, managing mistakes, or learning how to advocate for themselves.
I do not believe tutoring should feel intimidating or stressful. My goal is to help students understand the “why” behind what they are learning, not just memorize answers. I want students to leave sessions feeling more capable than when they started. Whether your child needs academic support, help catching up, enrichment, confidence-building, or individualized strategies that match their learning needs, I would be happy to help.
