Thank you for visiting my profile! Ever since my elementary years, I enjoyed the structure of mathematics and the challenge associated with finding answers to the puzzles it provides. As I grew older, my enthusiasm for the content was matched only by my enthusiasm for helping others to learn and grow. During my time at Knox College, I had opportunities to observe math education at each level of public education and to engage one-on-one with tutoring students as part of my experiential learning. One of my greatest joys as a teacher is witnessing the moment when a student fully develops their confidence and realizes how to use their skills to approach unfamiliar situations. Since starting my teaching career, students have seen high levels of growth each year on standardized tests, won numerous individual and team awards at math competitions, and become comfortable with approaching difficult tasks with curiosity and openness. As a consequence, I have been awarded the Albany School District Educator-of-the-year award three times throughout my career.
Since Albany High School is typically less than 100 students total, I have had opportunities to teach the entire gamut of math classes from 8th grade Prealgebra to dual college courses in Statistics and Calculus. Routinely, I will meet and tutor students individually to assess and serve their needs. It is important for me to meet students where they are at in their educational journey and to develop lessons and practice applicable to their levels of comfort and knowledge. Generally speaking, my greatest emphasis in lessons is helping students to make connections with previous knowledge while clarifying the meaning of vocabulary and symbols, often through analogies and contextual representations.
