Bio

I teach Anatomy & Physiology as an adjunct faculty member at a local university.

I also have 250+ hours of in-person and online tutoring experience. I have tutored everyone from middle schoolers to college students in math, chemistry, and biology.

Tutoring is a passion that flows from my natural ability to break down complex topics into smaller pieces that anyone can understand. That's why my day job is science journalism*. Seeing the "light bulb go on" is what I enjoy most about...

Tutoring is a passion that flows from my natural ability to break down complex topics into smaller pieces that anyone can understand. That's why my day job is science journalism*. Seeing the "light bulb go on" is what I enjoy most about tutoring.

I have a PhD in microbiology and a minor in chemistry. My teaching style is to make sure that students understand each step before progressing to the next in solving a problem. For abstract concepts, I employ visual analogies to everyday objects.

Students seem to enjoy working with me. I hope to hear from you!

Biochemistry

Biochemistry

I am a microbiology Ph.D. student at the University of Washington. As an undergraduate, I majored in microbiology (and minored in chemistry) and took a semester-long introductory biochemistry class. Everyday in the lab, I do biochemistry-like experiments. I extract lipids from bacteria, I perform DNA gel electrophoresis, etc. I also attend seminars and journal clubs, many of which have biochemistry principles in them (e.g., protein folding, etc.). While I don't remember an awful lot from the actual class (like formulas, metabolic cycles, etc.), I did make an "A" in the class, and I am confident that I would be able to tutor a student in introductory biochem after I did a little brushing up.
Biology

Biology

I have a PhD in microbiology
Biostatistics

Biostatistics

I earned a certificate in Applied Biostatistics from the University of Washington following a 3-quarter course in Medical Biometry. During the course, I learned how to use R to solve problems in biostatistics. Furthermore, I learned multiple linear regression, logistic regression, and survival analysis.
Calculus

Calculus

I went through Calculus 2 in college. And I enjoy the challenge of math problems!
Chemistry

Chemistry

Minored in chemistry
Epidemiology

Epidemiology

Hello, I took an epidemiology course in graduate school. Then, a couple years ago, I completed a series of courses on biostatistics, which is heavily reliant on epidemiology. Finally, I'm a science writer, and epidemiology and public health are among my most frequent topics. The last Wyzant student I just tutored was seeking help in epidemiology.
Government & Politics

Government & Politics

I took AP government in high school and got a 5 on the exam.
Microbiology

Microbiology

I have a PhD in microbiology and I am a Science journalist.
Physiology

Physiology

I taught Anatomy & Physiology to college students (who were mostly pre-nursing).
Statistics

Statistics

I am working toward a professional certificate in Applied Biostatistics at UW. I also took basic stats as an undergraduate.

Dedicated, patient, and extremely knowledgeable tutor

Alex has helped me now with both my masters level epidemiology and biostatistics courses. He does an amazing job of breaking down concepts I otherwise found confusing in lecture. He also goes an extra step by reviewing any class notes before our meeting to make doubly sure our sessions align with class. Amazing!

Great teacher, very patient!

Alex was patient and able to explain concepts in biostatistics in a way that was easier for me to understand! Thank you, I will also definitely book again!

Amazing Statistics Tutor!

I was feeling completely lost in my biostats class, but after working through the problems with Alex, I felt much more confident in the material. I also did far better on my exam than I would have without his help! He was able to explain the concepts in a more intuitive way so I could actually understand how to apply certain formulas. I would definitely recommend Alex to anyone struggling with statistics.

IF there’s a problem, yo he’ll solve it

First, let me start with I performed way better on my exam than the previous two. (Thanks again Alex, I couldn’t have done it without your tutoring style. Alex is absolutely amazing. I would highly recommend him for ANYTHING you are struggling with. Alex met with me for my session, the material I sent him, was a bigger PowerPoint than we had previously. So, after a little over an hour, my brain needed a break. (I’m sure his did also), but he didn’t want to end it in the middle of the PowerPoint, he wanted me to be able to have ALL of the information in one day, rather than doing the second part a different day. He asked me if I would be available later that evening to finish going over the subjects on the PowerPoints that we had left. Of course I was like yes!!!! He really does care about doing today’s work today. A huge thank you Alex, you are a rockstar!

Like a BOSS! 😎

Second sesh with Alex I believe, and many more to go. He is incredible at explaining Microbiology in a way to where I actually absorb and retain the information. I was definitely ready to tackle my exam. Thanks again Alex!

Helpful. Patient. Highly Recommend.

Alex is super helpful, very patient and organized. I’m more of a visual person, and Alex took the time to find pics of processes that helped me, and explained Microbiology stuff that I wasn’t understanding in class. Highly recommend, made a second session next week! Thanks again Alex!

Alex rules!

Alex did a bang up job completely changing the trajectory of a project I was stalled on--and he was as good with the qualitative description of the quantitative segments as he was with the pure numbers!! Add to all of that the fact that he was a pleasure to work with on a personal level, and you understand why he's now our go-to stats tutor!!

Knowledgeable and Helpful

Alex went over the basics of epidemiology with me. He was very patient and helped me critically appraise an article so that I can apply the main concepts of epi. I had sent him an article prior to our session for practice and he was able to read the article in detail prior. I would recommend Alex to anyone who needs help with biostats, epidemiology and statistical analysis.

Great Anatomy tutor

Alex was great. From listening to my son with his Anatomy questions, to passionately explaining the Musclular Systems material, the time was well spent.
