Welcome to Patricia Rimmer on Wyzant! As an experienced teacher and tutor, I built my expertise in Essay Writing, Composition, Literature, and Study Skills over 20 years. My teaching and tutoring experience is with Advanced Placement English Language Arts Students, Honors English Language Arts Students, Introductory and Intermediate College Writing Students, and College Admission Essay Students.

I aim to educate the whole person and to instill in each student the beliefs, values, and knowledge that support their ability to write well and think critically. I aim for proof of students understanding a subject and making a sustainable change toward understanding its relevance in today’s world. In helping students improve their writing, thinking, and study skills, I also guide them to find the sweet spot between expressing themselves creatively and expressing themselves academically.

My MA in English is focused on Rhetoric and the Teaching of Writing. I have successfully volunteer-tutored for two years with Literary Arts College Essay Exchange. My supervisor at Portland, Oregon's Literary Arts, Alberto Sveum, is Associate Manager of Youth Programs. He writes: "We were fortunate to have Patricia as a volunteer for multiple sessions of the College Essay Exchange, supporting high school juniors and seniors with their college admission essays. Kind and attentive to everyone she worked with, Patricia gave productive and helpful feedback to the prospective college students she worked with."

Tutoring services include Essay, Composition, Research Paper, Literary Analysis, and Argument Writing; Study Skills; and Individual College Admission Essay Coaching. I accept secondary and college students.

Creative Writing

Creative Writing

I have studied Fiction, Memoir, and Literary Non-Fiction with professional Pacific Northwest writers. As a high school teacher, I have co-facilitated a student Creative Writing Club. For over 20 years, I was a member of a monthly writing group, whose aims were to workshop with professional writers; critique each other’s writing; and to publish. As a college instructor, I created and facilitated writing communities that came together annually to publish in the school’s writing magazine.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I have published in English Journal, Oregon English Journal, and Chalkboard, all affiliated with the National Council of Teachers of English. Additionally, I have studied with Pacific Northwest professional writers. I am an avid reader of fiction and literary non-fiction, which supports the research and my belief that being experienced in reading supports and enhances an individual’s writing ability and repertoire.
Literature

Literature

I hold a BA in English and Theater and a MA in Rhetoric and the Teaching of Writing. In both programs, I read literature widely and became familiar with literary criticism. Through my teaching experience, I am familiar with many secondary education books and poetry. With the Oregon Council of Teachers of English, I have published book and film reviews.
Study Skills

Study Skills

It is my belief that my expertise in teaching writing also qualifies me to teach study skills. Improving one's study skills involves using time management, often breaking down a project or writing assignment into manageable steps, and creating a concrete system for the work rather than relying on motivation alone. Writing well can happen with this advice, as well. My teaching background includes successfully teaching study skills to college and secondary students.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

My teaching background includes teaching Composition and Research Writing to secondary and college students. I have completed all professional development courses with The Oregon Writing Project, with the aim of better preparing students to write well and to develop their writing voice, confidence, and performance. Additionally, I have researched the effects of teaching the standard five-paragraph essay and how to challenge students beyond it to more complex and critical thinking and writing.
Writing

Writing

I have published with the National Council of Teachers of English and the Oregon Council of Teachers of English; also, I've studied with several Pacific Northwest writers and poets. My interest in teaching writing grew as I completed my graduate degree and began teaching high school and college students. Currently, I believe that successfully tutoring and teaching writing is my calling.
