Hello! Zach here.

I run a game development studio where I have worked as a contractor for various studios and businesses over the last 13 years. With over a decade of professional experience in Unreal Engine, I’ve also made many contributions to its source code.

Educating others is my passion—I thrive on helping people get unstuck both technically and mentally, bringing their creative work to life. My goal is to make students self-sufficient by ensuring they understand concepts deeply. Every student is unique, so I tailor my approach to their individual backgrounds, learning styles, and paces.

I hold a BSE in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Math. I’m proficient in many programming languages, from assembly to LUA, though I spend most of my time in C++. My lifelong hobbies include programming, music, photography, and videography.

I produce my own music and also compose music for video games and film projects using Ableton Live. My photography spans professionally lit animal portraits to astrophotography to photogrammetry, primarily using Lightroom and Photoshop. Photography has greatly enhanced my ability to light environments in video games! I also capture GoPro, drone, and traditional video footage for travel documentaries and music videos.

Approved Subjects

Adobe Lightroom

Adobe Lightroom

I've been using Lightroom Classic since 2017. Lightroom is where I do most of my photo editing. I have 4 different cameras that I regularly upload photos from, I also spend a lot of time organizing my Lightroom Catalog using the Collections feature. Finally, I am passionate about making sure that memories are preserved, so I like to make sure that I have backups of my photos and my lightroom catalog.
C++

C++

I have been writing C++ professionally since 2006. C++ is a great language to write a game engine in, however, it is a terrible language to code game logic in. I suffer through it like everyone else but hopefully can make the process a bit easier for you.
Composition (Music)

Composition (Music)

I compose music for video game trailers and cutscenes, I also score my own travel videos and documentaries. Although I did take some classical composition classes in college, I would consider myself more of an electronic composer. I sometimes use orchestral elements, but mostly tend towards synthesizers and guitars. Composing music, whether it is for film or to stand-alone is largely the same in that they have the same end goal - tell a story and take the listener on an emotional journey.
Computer Gaming

Computer Gaming

I am a professional game developer with over a decade of experience designing and making games using Unreal Engine. I have made games for mobile, consoles, PC and VR headsets. I've used and prototyped games using most of the major systems in the engine, Gameplay Ability System, MASS (the UE ECS solution), chaos physics, etc. I am an expert in both C++ and blueprints. Many newcomers to Unreal Engine fret a lot over using blueprints, they worry about what problems they might hit down the road by only using blueprints. It's easy to worry when all you can do is guess. I like to follow a data-driven approach: measure first and then fix. I can teach you how to use the performance tools that the industry uses to find and fix your problem areas. I am also experienced making cinematics using sequencer and am decent at keyframing non-organic models. I also have a ton of experience getting lights looking good, including baked/static lighting for less powerful devices.
Music Production

Music Production

I have been producing electronic music for 5 years, mostly in the Synthwave genre. Although the concepts of music production can be achieved in any DAW, I use Ableton Live. I also use a Dirtywave M8 tracker, the Ableton Push 2 and a LinnStrument expressive midi controller. I also organize a local music production community that helps support other producers and encourages them to finish their art. I also enjoy scoring travel videos.
Photography

Photography

I started with photography back in 1999 when I shot for the college newspaper/yearbook and worked in the black and white photo lab. Today I mostly enjoy travel photos, portraits and composites.
Songwriting

Songwriting

I am a songwriter. To me, songwriting is a way to mark an emotion, idea or thought in time, it is a statement saying "this is me, I was here". There are many tools and techniques for songwriting that we can exercise to improve our craft. If you write vocals, Object Writing is extremely useful, it's a way to get used to thinking about subjects using all 7 senses. Studying common song structure is another tool, being familiar with AAA vs ABAB vs ABABCBB.
Unreal Engine

Unreal Engine

I have been using Unreal Engine since 2004. I've worked on shipping games that are both single player and multiplayer. I've made and shipped virtual reality games on Quest 1-3, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. I am an expert in blueprints, C++, custom plugins and everything else that is game-centric (writing game mechanics, sfx, vfx, animation, physics, etc). I also regularly contribute source code to the engine.
Video Production

Video Production

I use DaVinci Resolve to make videos. I make music videos, travel highlights and documentaries. I'm familiar with the DaVinci workflow, cutting videos, organizing videos into bins, timeline editing, sync'ing audio beats to cuts, color grading, export and the shortcut keys to make things faster! I'm happy to send links to a few of the videos I have produced.
