I'm comfortable working with students from beginner to class B. I am fully retired and actively teach chess with students as far away as the UK. My results have generally been very good, with multiple students achieving 1st place in Washington State scholastic competitions.

I was an officer of the Tacoma Chess Club while active there, and was Tacoma City and Pierce County champion for 2016. I tied for that honor two other times out of the four years I competed for it.

I no longer compete, but did achieve a master rating years ago. I placed in the top 3 for local championships every year I competed. In my last active year in local events, I had an even record against expert and master rated opponents.

I am currently the lead chess instructor for the Tacoma chess club. I am also the Pierce County chess champion and the Tacoma City champion. My highest rating achieved was Master and I have been playing and teaching chess for many years.

Great teacher

Tom is very enthusiastic about chess and has a clear knowledge of the deeper intricacies of the game. Our lesson was very educational and eye opening. I could not be happier with the experience and definitely recommend for anyone who is seeking to improve their chess.

GREAT instructor!

Tom is an AMAZING chess instructor for my 8-year old daughter! She learned SO much just out of a single lesson and is already showing improvements in her matches at her school chess club. She even beat her older brother TWICE the other night, which never happens, by applying the lesson instructions that Tom guided her on. HIGHLY recommend Tom as a chess coach!
