Hello! I’m Mark, and I am a teacher, bassist, choral singer, and retired Professor of Music Theory. I’ve always been fascinated by how music works, and I am passionate about helping folks develop a solid sense of musicianship.

Hello! I’m Mark, and I am a teacher, bassist, choral singer, and retired Professor of Music Theory. I’ve always been fascinated by how music works, and I am passionate about helping folks develop a solid sense of musicianship.

If you are a student taking a music theory course, I would love to help you increase your musicianship skills, such as dictation/transcription, sight-singing, and keyboard harmony. These skills help us make sense of the “written” skills (tonality, chord symbols, analysis) that can often be frustrating; we can and will refer to these while we use our eyes, ears, and voices.

If you are a musician looking to develop your ears or “learn theory,” I would be delighted to dive in to the tunes you’re learning. Want to nail that upcoming audition? Not sure which key this song is in? Don’t know what to do when you see “D7alt” on a lead sheet? Want to come up with a good harmony part? I can meet you at your level while we expand our understanding of what works, what doesn’t work, and why.

I have taught musicianship (“aural skills,” including sight-singing and dictation) as a stand-alone course and as a part of an undergraduate music theory curriculum.

I am currently a music teacher and adjunct professor, teaching music theory, aural skills, voice, piano, guitar, and bass. I have taught the undergraduate core theory sequence, and graduate classes in analysis and counterpoint. I have also taught music in K-12 public and private schools.
Sight Singing

Sight Singing

I teach sight singing as part of private voice instruction and as a component of “aural skills” in an undergraduate music theory curriculum. I have taught private students of all ages, and I have worked with students in K-12 public and private schools. I am active as an instrumentalist and choral singer in the Puget Sound region.
