Before becoming a college instructor and tutor 25 years ago, I spent several years working for a variety of businesses: banks, real estate agencies, manufacturing plants, libraries, and warehouses, which involved all different types of writing and personalities. I learned that most people were nervous about their writing skills and lacked confidence due to harsh criticism in the past. I have learned to provide useful, respectful feedback, ask questions that help writers and students think deeply about their work, and to help them problem-solve. Most learners want relevance and practicality plus some room for inspiration and creativity. I have tutored students in a wide range of topic areas through helping them understand what their assignments are asking for, listening to their concerns, and providing resources that empower them to work interdependently.

I earned my MA degree in English to help others become strong writers and to improve my own writing skills, and I learned so much from my own students. I have loved anthropology and archaeology since I knew what they were, and I earned my PhD in Cultural Heritage Studies so that I could share my enthusiasm with others who love learning about systems and how other cultures - past and present - function. I love research and can guide others through the process. I earned my graduate degrees as an adult student with kids and other responsibilities, so I understand balancing work, family, and school.

Anthropology and archaeology require detective work, curiosity, and creativity, all elements of learning that are important just to function in daily life. Thus anthropology and archaeology are highly relevant to “real life.” Figuring out why people use available resources as they do and seeing the similarities among human beings lead to better critical thinking. The tools we use to deduce facts and insights about a culture require understanding and finesse, but the benefits of this deeper understanding are vast and enduring.

Anthropology

Anthropology

My classroom teaching experience includes courses in Cultural Anthropology, Native American history, and issues faced by tribal communities, connected to broader issues of education and government. With research interests including endangered language communities, from Hawaii to France, Wales, and Eastern Europe, I have a broad background in issues in anthropology. My dissertation focused on language sovereignty in minority communities, and my conference presentations have been designed to create greater understanding of language rights and their benefits.
Archaeology

Archaeology

After a life-long interest in archaeology, my field school experience included being part of a team that excavated an area occupied 10,000 years ago by indigenous people. Our field work exposed fire pits, ceramics, and a quartz spear point and was followed by describing and cataloguing all findings. Although family responsibilities have kept me close to my hearth, my research interests have included dendrochronology (dating artifacts via tree rings), ancient climates, linguistic archaeology, underwater archaeology (used to evaluate shipwrecks such as the famous Atocha), and European castle architecture.

Grammar

Grammar

20+ years of classroom instruction and working with students of all ages and backgrounds have given me experience in sharing techniques and strategies for improvement. First, we'll diagnose your specific strengths and areas needing improvement and then use tools to help you meet your goals with language and communication. Everyone has areas needing improvement and with practice and application will see their own growth and confidence.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

After teaching my first night class to a group of tired bankers (tough crowd!), I attended a public speaking workshop that explained public speaking anxiety and provided techniques for overcoming it, which I continue to use. 20+ years of classroom teaching have allowed me to fill my public speaking toolkit with strategies for engaging listeners, dealing with hecklers, and using materials effectively. Participating in formal conferences has allowed me to fine-tune my skills to create professional but approachable presentations. Zoom presentations use many of the same techniques in addition to the limitations and advantages technology provides.

Very helpful and knowledgable

Dr. Annie helped me so much with anthropology and understanding concepts in order to construct a well written paper. Answered all the questions that I had and explained everything in detail. She is very knowledgable and explains concepts in a way that makes it easy for someone with no anthropology background to understand!

Knowledgeable and patient!

First, she listened to me. Then she responded with what she heard, which was exact! Next, we discussed the obstacles that I have faced with writing assignments. Great start!
