I have 25 years of teaching and tutoring experience ranging from Kindergarten to community college level and encompassing individual, small group, and large group classes both in person and online. I assess students to determine where they are as well as locating areas for improvement and begin with those points but also try to be student directed meaning students can tell me ways they learn well and are free to comment on methods I use. If they prefer more "hands on" learning with activities, games, and movement, we will do those type of learning activities. If students prefer more visual and audio methods, we will utilize that type of activity in class. I typically use many types of activities to help with memorization and communication in a language. Students can then select the ways which seem to assist them the most.

I spent three years living overseas studying the languages and the culture and worked several years in the international community. Therefore, I have cultural knowledge to share. I love languages and cultures and do my utmost to pass this enthusiasm to my students.

ESL/ESOL

I have been teaching English as a Second Language for many years. I started teaching English to speakers of Japanese when I was living in Osaka, Japan in 1984. I continued tutoring English to my co-workers in a Japanese trading company located in Seattle. For four years, I prepared prospective college students for passing the ASSET test for English placement by working with them from level one to level five of Intensive English classes. Additionally, I assisted with testing new students each quarter as well as orienting new students to our campus.
German

German

I seem to have a facility for languages. I learned Spanish; then found that learning other languages was even easier for me now that I understood what methods worked for me. Because I have learned other languages, I can share what worked for me as well as presenting students with a variety of choices for their own learning. I begin by getting to know a student personally; then present the student with visual, audio, and physical input. We will also do some reading, writing, and grammar exercises. We also try games, music, and online practice. Little by little, both the student and I can determine which strategies work best and leave out what does not.
Grammar

Grammar

I am a grammar nut. I love it! I had so much fun in all grammar classes at school. Sentence structure is extremely important to good communication and also pertinent to all who need to pass an SAT type test. I have taught grammar to both native and non-native English speakers - usually in the context of constructing paragraphs and essays but also as a stand alone concept. I teach English grammar for my students of Spanish, German, French, and Japanese as well. Many people can speak well but find it more challenging when they actually have to dissect a sentence. I teach via worksheets and textbooks but also with games and music to try to lighten the mood a bit. We will keep trying methods until we both find what works for you!
Japanese

Japanese

I lived in Japan for a year; then worked seven years in a Japanese trading company based in Seattle. This gave me both language and cultural knowledge. I utilize a variety of assessments and methods for helping students learn this challenging language. I like students to have some fun while learning so I incorporate games, visuals, and music into lessons as often as possible. I also use a natural approach when possible meaning that I teach you the same way you learned your native language - by listening and responding. We will work together to find the best approach for your needs.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I have several years of proofreading experience and am highly trained in teaching the English language. I am a naturally good speller and took many classes in punctuation and feel that I have superior ability in this area.
Spanish

Spanish

My grandmother turned me on to Spanish. She was an active learner all her life and kept working on her Spanish until she died at age 93. She was and remains my inspiration. She became intently interested in the language because my grandfather had cousins who were living in Mexico. The subsequent generations are all Mexican citizens. She encouraged me to visit them and also to go live in Spain. This gave me a chance to experience life in both countries as well as learning the language. I love languages and seek to instill this love in others. Learning a language can seem like drudgery so I will try to lighten that mood by introducing physical movement, music, and games using the language as well as try several other methods until both the student and I can determine what is most helpful.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

I am linguistically gifted and speak five languages. I always loved vocabulary as my family of origin loved word games and trying to memorize as many words as possible. I have also taught vocabulary in a variety of ways for all the languages I teach. I believe I can help others learn strategies to develop their own love of words and to increase their working vocabulary.
Writing

Writing

I taught composition for five years and love to write. I can help students develop their organization as well as the mechanics. I have many practice books for developing better thesis statements and other aspects of organizing writing. I excelled at writing college papers and would love to share strategies with you.
