I'm Maddy! I graduated from Pitzer College (of the Claremont Colleges) with honors (a 3.9 GPA); my degree is in Sociology and Organizational Studies with a Politics focus. I'm a Fulbright Scholar currently in Seattle working as a tutor until I begin my Fulbright Fellowship teaching English in Malaysia in 2020. I believe that academics have the potential to be profoundly empowering or profoundly disempowering and my goal as a tutor is always to work collaboratively with students to figure out how we can make the process as painless (and maybe even enjoyable!) as possible.

My expertise as a tutor is in the realm of writing; I'd love to work with you on anything from brainstorming to proofreading, and my experience with writers spans from academic essays and lab reports to college/graduate school applications and resumes. I'm also versed in working with students on SAT and ACT English prep and with younger students on reading, writing, grammar, and organizational skills. I have worked with students ages six through sixty and I would be excited to work with you regardless of age and/or experience. My students have received Fulbright fellowships, acceptances to top graduate and law schools (such as Stanford, Duke, and UCLA), and improved grades; while I don't see these outcomes as the most important part of the process, I've loved having the opportunity to work with them toward these successes.

Specifically, throughout the past four years, I worked as a Fellowship Consultant and Head Fellow at Pitzer College's Writing Center. Here, I supported students through all stages of the writing process, mentored other tutors, led thesis-writing workshops, and TA'd courses focusing on applying for fellowships. I have worked with students on academic papers, senior theses, college entrance essays, fellowship applications, graduate school personal statements, law, medical school, and job applications, lab reports, creative writing endeavors, and resumes. Throughout this time, I participated in over fifty hours of training regarding tutoring strategies, and I know that ultimately there is no one way to tutor: what works best is a collaborative approach centering each individual student's needs and learning style. Above all, I want to forge positive connections with students, and to make the tutoring process as fruitful and confidence-boosting as possible.

Beyond writing, I have been a tutor with a more general focus for the past eight years. I worked both at Youth Tutoring Program Seattle with elementary and middle school-aged students in all subject areas and at The Bush School with fifth-grade students on study skills and organization. In this vein, I spent four summers as a Day Camp Counselor at The Evergreen School, creating a fun, safe learning environment for elementary-aged campers--which I loved! Additionally, I've spent several summers teaching English abroad, and am experienced with ESL students.

While I'm new to the Wyzant platform, I'm certainly not new to tutoring; feel free to reach out with questions and/or for references!

I spent the last four years as a Fellowship Specialist at Pitzer College's Writing Center. As a Fellowship Specialist, I took part in a plethora of trainings geared toward understanding what readers look for in fellowship, grad-school, and grant applications. I have a breadth of experience working with students on personal statements, applications, resumes, and cover letters; I work with clients throughout all stages of the writing process, ranging from brainstorming to fine-tuning. My students have successfully won Fulbright Fellowships and acceptances to top law and graduate schools (including Stanford, Duke, NYU, and UCLA). Additionally, I have TA'd the course, Global-Local Teaching Workshop, which solely focused on working with students to craft Fellowship Applications. Though the majority of my work has centered graduate-level applications, I have additionally worked extensively with students seeking to transfer colleges, and I'm very familiar with the undergrad application process, the Common Application Essay, and with the values of many colleges throughout the country. With all of this being said, I simply love working with students on college and graduate school applications. It's both an exciting and overwhelming time, and I work collaboratively with clients to figure out how we can make the process as painless (and hopefully enjoyable!) as possible.

Madeline G. was a great person to take and work with during the process of writing my common application essay! She helped me go into more detail and improved my essay immensely! I would definitely recommend her to anyone! She does a great job at help you translate your thoughts into a well structured essay. Friendly, relatable and encouraging tutor

She did a great job drawing out info from my son to help pull in the most important details about his college essay to appeal to college admissions about what is unique about himself. She summarized exactly what he was saying so that he could put words together in essay.

Amazing writing tutor and word wizard!

Madeline was always very organized, on time, patient and dedicated a lot of time to work with me on such a tight deadline. She made a difficult and stressful process much easier and manageable. She asked great questions that helped me to dig deeper and think through the process. We worked on google docs for rough drafts, and she always provide notes on our discussions and comments for the essays. Her eagerness to help was amazing and her writing talent inspiring, I will certainly be working with Madeline again. If you are looking for someone to help you with college essays, applications, or scholarship essays, look no further because Madeline is the person you should contact!

Tremendously helpful for my D with college essays

My daughter has had a few sessions with Maddy so far and she has been incredibly helpful. It amazes me how much of my D’s story she has been able to pull out in such a short period of time. She takes notes on everything my D tells her and then provides writing prompts to get her to tell her story to get across who she is. She provides really helpful edits too - never writing for her but making suggestions to best get her story across. Maddy has also helped her organize and prioritize with so many of her colleges having supplemental essays. I am sure that the finished products will be great. Maddie is really a great writer and tutor. She is both patient and supportive. My D really enjoys her sessions with Maddy. After the first session, when my D was so stressed about the essay, I asked her how it went and she said “Great. It was like therapy. I feel sooo much better!”
