I am a professor of English at the University of Washington and Cascadia College, where I teach courses on first year composition, creative writing, research writing, and developmental English. In addition to teaching, I have worked as a tutor for 8+ years in the Bay Area and Seattle. I have experience working with students of all ages and abilities, including students with dyslexia, ADHD, ADD, and anxiety.

I am a professional writer of fiction, poetry, news articles, and creative non-fiction essays. My creative work has appeared in esteemed literary journals, such as Bennington Review, Hobart, and Santa Clara Review, and my non-fiction work has appeared in The Huffington Post, SF Travel, 7x7, and various nonprofit and commercial websites. I have also served as on the editorial board of several journals and university newspapers.

I find it incredibly rewarding to work with students on writing, reading comprehension, test preparation, and study skills. My students have described my teaching style as kind, patient, and thorough. I firmly believe that every student has their own unique writing voice, and I enjoy helping students discover that voice on the page. In my teaching, I stress the importance of adopting a growth mindset, where every student sees their current abilities as merely a starting point. One of my main goals for writing tutoring is that my students will no longer form an identity around their perceived academic deficits (i.e., “I’m a bad writer”), but will instead see themselves as capable learners with the potential for improvement.

As an experienced writer, editor, and teacher, I help my students craft writing that they are proud to submit. Many of my students have told me that the essays we worked on together were the best papers they had ever written and that these papers significantly increased their confidence in school.

My tutoring specialties include essays (for students of all ages and levels), college personal statements, admissions essays, academic essays, research papers, creati

Accuplacer

Accuplacer

I have helped numerous students prepare for the English and math components of the Accuplacer test, as well as other types of standardized tests. I begin with a diagnostic test, and cover key areas where the student's are lacking fundamental skills, and then work with students on sample tests.
American History

American History

I am very comfortable tutoring history, particularly European and American history and government. At Hamilton College, I took history courses on European History from 1300 to 1815, European History, the History of the Civil War, History of American Political Oratory, British History from 1700 to Modern day, Russian History from Kievan Rus' to Putin, and History of Russian Film. At the University of Washington, I expanded my studies of British literature into the larger historical moments of the industrial revolution, Modernist period, and the tensions leading up to WWI. My specialties include American and European 20th century history (WWI and WWII), American political machines and political corruption, social history, the American Civil War, the Russian Revolution, the history of the Reformation and the Catholic Church (with a focus on the establishment of the Church of England), and the Irish Civil War and subsequent violence during The Troubles. I am very familiar with the content of the AP and IB exams for high school students, and I enjoy working with students of all ages and abilities. My background as a writing teacher also makes me highly qualified to help students write research papers and history term papers. My own creative writing is often set in historical time periods, and I have extensive experience performing independent research using primary and secondary historical sources.
English

English

I have taught English for three years at the university level (including courses on rhetoric and composition, creative writing, and English literature), and I have tutored English and writing for eight years to students of all age levels (from kindergarten to adults) and abilities. I received my master's degree in English from the University of Washington and my bachelor's degree in English from Hamilton College, an elite liberal arts college in New York. I am a published author (poetry, fiction, and news articles), and I enjoy working with students on improving reading comprehension, tackling difficult texts, and developing analytical skills across all subjects. I am very comfortable tutoring students in AP and IB English courses, as well as in helping students prepare for the English and writing sections of the SAT, ACT, GRE, ISEE, and SSAT exams. My scholarly background is in contemporary literature, American literature, British literature, poetry and poetics, and women writers.
Geometry

I am a professor at UW and Cascadia College, and I received my master's degree from UW. I have a master's and bachelor's degree in English (from University of Washington and Hamilton College, respectively). I attended a math and science magnet high school in Cupertino, CA and have completed through Calculus II. I am very comfortable tutoring algebra, geometry, algebra II, and trigonometry, and I have worked with numerous students on the math section of the SAT, ACT and GRE.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I have a Master's Degree from the University of Washington, and I tutor students in test prep, English, math, and study skills. I enjoy working with elementary and middle school students on math fundamentals, and I particularly enjoy tutoring pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry. I have taken through Calculus II, and I feel comfortable tutoring throughout Algebra 2/ Trigonometry.
Writing

Writing

I have taught writing for three years at the university level, and I have tutored writing for eight years to students of all age levels (from kindergarten to adults) and abilities. I received my master's degree (MFA) in English from the University of Washington and my bachelor's degree in English from Hamilton College, an elite liberal arts college in New York. I am a published author (poetry, fiction, and news articles), and I enjoy working with students on academic papers, creative writing, research papers, admissions essays, and AP/ IB test prep. I am also a very competent copy editor, and I have worked as an editor at numerous professional and student-run publications. If you have an essay that needs some work, I can do more than simply edit for spelling and grammar—I can give you substantial feedback on the argument, structure and organization of your paper. Also, for students who are just beginning to write papers (or who never were actually taught how to write a paper), I can give you a sound and painless blueprint for acing your next paper.
