I have 15+ years of teaching/tutoring experience, and my passion for tutoring comes from a love of seeing students grow and succeed in areas in which they have struggled in the past. My experience ranges from being a math tutor in high school, a writing tutor for undergraduate and graduate students in college, and a high school English teacher for over 6 years, to tutoring upper elementary students through high school seniors in writing, English, math, time management, and study skills. I have also taught and tutored adult ESL classes and lessons. One of my goals in teaching is to help students develop a love of learning and become independent learners. I love to see students become well-rounded and versatile in their ability to overcome obstacles and work towards success in all areas of life.

I am especially passionate about teaching writing and research skills, as well as language arts and literature. I am experienced in tutoring for SAT prep, and I am also able to help with math homework up to the level of Geometry and Algebra 2. In addition, I have a TESOL certification and enjoy working with English Language Learners to help them learn how to manage academics while developing English skills at the same time.

I am flexible with what each tutoring session can look like, depending on the student's needs. The first session will include goal-setting to determine the student's needs and how best to reach them. Based on these needs, I can help the student with homework, I can assign extra supplementary practice for trouble areas, I can guide the student through editing papers, I can assist the student with organizational skills, or do whatever else will help the student meet his/her goals. In addition, as a summa cum laude graduate, I realize the value of hard work and diligence in reaching one's goals, and therefore, I hope to instill a diligent work ethic in every student I tutor.

I look forward to hearing from you and meeting with you to see how I can help you work towards your goals!

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Math is fun for me now, but it was not always that way. In middle school, I really struggled with understanding algebra and geometry. However, I was able to overcome my challenges and learned to enjoy math to the point that I took the AP Calculus test and passed it. I also joined a Math club in high school and participated in high-level math competitions at universities like MIT and Princeton.
Bible Studies

Bible Studies

I received my Bachelor's Degree in Biblical Studies at Cairn University, along with my degree in English Education. Therefore, as both a teacher and a Bible major, I have taught high school level Bible classes, as well as elementary level Sunday School classes. I am also involved in many Bible studies at church.
English

English

I have a current English Education certificate for grades 7-12. I also currently teach literature for grades 10-12 at my high school. In college, I tutored students in the Writing Lab on undergraduate and graduate level papers. I love to read and write and am passionate about communicating well in English.
Flute

Flute

I have been playing the flute for about 12 years. I took private lessons in high school and college, and I have played in a high school band, community band, college wind ensemble, various chamber music groups, duets, and various other groups. I read music well and I also have a foundation in piano.
Geometry

Geometry

I have taught a one-to-one credit class in Geometry, and I have tutored many one-to-one sessions for Geometry, using the Big Ideas curriculum, as well as the Envision curriculum.
Grammar

Grammar

I have always enjoyed grammar. From diagramming sentences to using commas correctly, I find a unique joy in crafting sentences that are not only correct but also clear. In high school, I was intently focused on learning grammar, and that knowledge has stuck with me and has been perfected throughout college until now. Currently, as a high school English teacher, I help students learn to write correctly and effectively.
Homeschool

Homeschool

As a trained teacher, I realize the value of individualized education for helping students realize their full potential. Homeschooling is a wonderful way to help students get the individualized attention they need to succeed and grow at their own pace, while also meeting state standards for education. Having been home schooled myself, I am familiar with the curriculum and textbooks often used, as well as with the limitations that come with teaching students at home. Also, as a certified teacher in 7-12 grade English, and K-12 TESOL, I am trained and experienced in educational strategies that can apply not only in the classroom, but also in the home school environment.
Literature

Literature

I am a book-worm. I love reading all types of genres--from fantasy to mystery to poetry to science fiction, I enjoy it all. In studying English Education in college, I was required to take various literature courses, including American Lit, World Lit, British Lit, Contemporary Lit, and Lit and Arts. I also currently teach 10th-12th grade literature (American Lit, World Lit, and British Lit).
Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word

I have experience formatting Microsoft Word for my own use, and also in doctorate level writing as a copy editor.
Praxis

Praxis

As a current teacher, I had to pass the Praxis to become certified. I did very well on the Praxis (both the general Praxis and the subject-area English Praxis). I am experienced in helping students learn test-taking strategies and time management, and I would be happy to help other aspiring teachers pass the Praxis.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

To some people, understanding math comes naturally. However, this was not my experience in learning math. I struggled to understand algebra, but after eventually overcoming these difficulties, I learned to love algebra, geometry, calculus, and math in general. I even joined math clubs in high school and became a math tutor for middle school students. Currently, although I am a high school literature teacher, I still seek out ways to enjoy math and help others do the same. Specifically in prealgebra, I am able to help students talk through areas of confusion and help them understand the logic behind the rules and formulas, so that they can better understand their classes and schoolwork.
SAT Math

SAT Math

The SAT can seem like an impossible obstacle to conquer. However, through my experience tutoring students in SAT prep, I can offer various strategies and methods that are helpful in test-taking and time-management for the SAT. Whether it is the math, reading, or writing section, I help students identify the types of questions they struggle with and talk through strategies that can help them. Specifically on the math section, I can help students learn formulas and methods that they can apply to the various types of math problems they will find on the SAT.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

In the past, I have performed well on the SAT, ACT, and other similar tests. Now as a high school literature teacher, I have tutored high school students for SAT prep. I also am experienced in tutoring math, writing, and reading on the high school level and know what it takes to help high school students succeed academically.
SAT Writing

SAT Writing

The SAT test is one of the hurdles that all high school students must leap to enter into the college of their choice. My goal is to help students enjoy the process of preparing for the SAT. Whether it is the writing, math, or reading section of the SAT, I am experienced in helping students learn test-taking and time management strategies that will help them conquer each portion of the test. For the writing section specifically, I help students form a process for the writing the essay, as well as helping them understand the grammar questions of the test.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

In writing, reading, and communicating verbally, students need to be able to comprehend and correctly use a gamut of vocabulary words in order to succeed academically. As a high school literature teacher, I teach vocabulary using the Sadlier Vocabulary Workshop curriculum. This curriculum prepares students for words that they will encounter on SAT and ACT tests. I have used a variety of methods and strategies to help my students learn and study these words, not just to memorize the definitions but also to use them correctly in speaking and writing.
Writing

Writing

Writing is not only part of my job as a high school literature teacher, but it is also a hobby. Writing is a passion of mine, and I love helping others learn how to become better writers. I have experience tutoring writing for many age levels, including K-12 students, undergraduate college students, and graduate college students.

Very patient and connects well with the student

Lindsay was able to connect with my son and determine his needs for preparing for another SAT test. She is very patient and takes the time to understand what my son is thinking when choosing the various answers. She has also provided a tip or two when taking the test. We are looking forward to several more sessions before he takes the test again in 6 weeks.
