Hi, I'm Lionel! I started my educational career giving riding and driving lessons at a show horse barn to folks who were anywhere from 5 to 65 years old. Hi, I'm Lionel! I started my educational career giving riding and driving lessons at a show horse barn to folks who were anywhere from 5 to 65 years old. I majored in biology with a minor in molecular biology, and I'm still working in the research lab I started in as an undergrad with a particular focus on zebrafish husbandry practices. I taught the lab section for the 2025 Animal Development (i.e. embryology) course at WSU Vancouver, where I really started to refine my scientific communication and settle in to my own teaching style.

I have experience tutoring neurodivergent students at high school and college levels, and I pride myself in my ability to help students work with their own brains instead of against them. To this end, each of my sessions is set as a 1-3 hour block in my schedule to account for breaks for processing needs and physiological resets. I find it incredibly fulfilling to help students find what maximizes their executive function and long term success while encouraging a lifestyle of continual curiosity and love for learning.

While my professional teaching and tutoring experience is primarily at the high school and undergraduate level, I am more than happy to take on middle school students and older elementary schoolers.

Approved Subjects

Genetics

Genetics

I have over 3 years of experience researching and doing community outreach work (e.g. high school tours and activity days, funding tours) with the pigment mutation lab I work for. I have significant experience teaching high schoolers, undergraduate students, and adults about the practical applications of dihybrid crosses and double homozygotes (such as the Casper zebrafish strain), using "weighted heterozygote" pairings to produce full sibling zebrafish embryos with different phenotypes, and effective identification of heterozygous carriers for homozygous lethal traits through spawning tests or gene assays. As an undergrad majoring in biology with a molecular biology minor, I received an A in Genetics, Evolution, Cell Biology, and Contemporary Genetics. I also took immunology and was particularly strong in the concept of antibody generation through recombination. In high school, I was the first sophomore to take AP Biology in the school and received a 4 on the AP test, paving the way for sophomores in the years after.
Zoology

Zoology

I taught Animal Development (echinoderm and vertebrate embryology) during the 2025 course offering at WSU Vancouver. I am currently the zebrafish room manager at the lab on campus I have worked at for 3+ years. I am currently writing a paper on husbandry for sensitive mutant strains of zebrafish and the effect of the microbiome on gut development (and therefore larval and juvenile development). I have trained show horses in a professional capacity for riding and driving since 2019. I owner-trained my partner's seizure alert/response service dog for public access, alerts, and rolling them into recovery positon after a seizure.
