My name is Stephanie M., and I am an experienced tutor who loves reading, writing, and math. I was the valedictorian of my high school class and graduated from Rice University in May of 2011 with bachelor's degrees in mathematics, English, and French Studies. I currently reside in the beautiful state of Washington.

I've been tutoring students for years, starting in high school as part of the National Honor Society and as the president of our school's literary club, Writers' Circle. As a member of NHS, I scheduled tutoring sessions before and after school in math and French to help fellow high school students who were struggling in those subjects. In Writers' Circle, I worked with high school students who wanted to learn more about creative writing. I also often tutored informally: I was the go-to "tutor" for many of my friends and classmates who had math or French questions or who needed someone to look over an essay or college application.

I continued to work with students in college as part of the Academic Fellows, an honorary service organization dedicated to improving academic life at the university. I tutored college students one-on-one in both French and math and worked with students to plan and revise essays in various subjects. I also wrote and helped distribute instructional materials on writing English essays and structuring mathematical proofs.

After graduating from Rice and moving to Washington, I continued tutoring through the King County Library System's Study Zone program, where I currently work with students of all ages in subjects ranging from writing and spelling to algebra and geometry to biology and history.

The most important thing I can do as a tutor is to help students learn general skills and study skills, not just how to complete the specific assignments we work on together. While working with a middle school student on ancient Egyptian history, for example, I make sure to emphasize how to use chapter summaries to pinpoint what to study for an upcoming exam, the importance of learning

Algebra 1

I did quite well in all my middle and high school math classes, including algebra I. I was often the go-to girl for helping my friends understand math concepts they were struggling with. I was able to figure out how to explain the concepts or problems in a way that made sense to them. Later, I used those same skills in a math tutoring program I helped set up at my high school through our school's chapter of the National Honor Society. I eventually majored in mathematics at Rice University, where I was an academic fellow, tutoring students in college-level mathematics, among other subjects. When tutoring math, my goal is not just to help the student with whatever specific assignment he or she is working on at the time, but to make sure the student learns how to solve other problems like the ones he or she is working on. I can help students understand the concepts behind specific problems and how those concepts fit into the big picture. And perhaps most importantly of all, I love mathematics, and I have always enjoyed helping others learn to love it, too!

Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I love working with kids, and I'm available to tutor elementary school students in any subject area. I have experience working with both elementary and middle school students and have tutored them in subjects as diverse as math (including geometry and algebra), English grammar and spelling, biology, and history. As a successful student myself (valedictorian in high school, triple-major in college), I will not only work with students on specific assignments but on important basic study skills that will serve students well years in the future. Most importantly, however, I loved going to school and I will work to pass on that love of learning to your child by making learning fun! If you'd simply like me to help your child with homework, I'll find creative ways to help him or her figure out the answers to any particularly tricky questions. If you're interested in tutoring in a particular subject (or several subjects), or if your child needs some extra practice with a particular concept (subtraction, spelling, etc.), I can use colorful flash cards for practice, play math and language games, or illustrate scientific concepts using everyday objects, depending on your child's needs.

English

English

I have always loved reading and writing, and I enjoy using that passion to help others work with language as well. I graduated from Rice University with a B.A. in English, so I've annotated my fair share of novels and written my fair share of essays. At Rice, as an academic mentor, I often worked with fellow students on writing and revising essays. I can help you design an effective thesis statement, structure your paper in a logical way, or simply look over your work to catch grammar errors or reword awkward sentences. Sometimes all an essay needs is a second pair of eyes. Good writing often begins with good, attentive reading. I'm happy to work with students on developing good reading strategies, including practicing effective annotation, recognizing rhetorical devices, and identifying major themes. These strategies come together in choosing an essay topic and effectively arguing your point, so they're essential to master. I also enjoy working with younger students and would be happy to help with shorter papers, understanding the basics of writing a good sentence, and developing solid reading comprehension skills.
Geometry

Geometry

I did quite well in all my middle and high school math classes, including geometry. I was often the go-to girl for helping my friends understand math concepts they were struggling with. I was able to figure out how to explain the concepts or problems in a way that made sense to them. Later, I used those same skills in a math tutoring program I helped set up at my high school through our school's chapter of the National Honor Society. Prealgebra

I did quite well in all my middle and high school math classes, including pre-algebra. I was often the go-to girl for helping my friends understand math concepts they were struggling with. I was able to figure out how to explain the concepts or problems in a way that made sense to them. Later, I used those same skills in a math tutoring program I helped set up at my high school through our school's chapter of the National Honor Society. I can help students understand the concepts behind specific problems and how those concepts fit into the big picture. This is especially important in pre-algebra, often the first introduction a student will have into more advanced mathematics. Most importantly of all, though, I love mathematics, and I have always enjoyed helping others learn to love it, too!

Writing

Writing

I have always loved to write, and I enjoy using that passion to help others work with language as well. I graduated from Rice University with a B.A. in English, so I've written my fair share of essays of varying lengths. I have experience writing essays not only for English classes (analyzing literature, presenting an argument, or structuring a story, for example), but for history, philosophy, math, physics, linguistics, French, and astronomy classes as well, just to name a few. At Rice, as an academic mentor, I often worked with fellow students on writing and revising essays. Several students came back after they had received a grade on their essays to thank me and tell me they'd gotten A's. I can help you design an effective thesis statement, structure your paper in a logical way, or simply look over your work to catch grammar errors or reword awkward sentences. Sometimes all an essay needs is a second pair of eyes. I also enjoy working with younger students and would be happy to help with shorter papers, understanding the basics of writing a good sentence, or completing writing worksheets for class. And if you have a less conventional writing assignment, I can probably help with that, too! I have experience working with students to write and edit poetry, and have even written several essays in French.

Amazing Tutor!!

Stephanie has been an incredible tutor for my teenage son. She's very kind, understanding, down-to-earth, patient, and knowledgeable. She makes him feel comfortable and confident with his knowledge after each appointment. We went to Stephanie for tutoring help for the upcoming SAT/ACTs. She easily teaches from each topic (math, English, and writing); it's obvious that she's comfortable in all these areas. She went through his PSAT, that he took last fall, and was able to help him understand the problems that he missed and teach him the concepts behind each one. She brought additional math practice pages for him to do in the areas that he didn't feel as strong in. We have also been happy that she is willing to help him with his current classes. She helped him understand a trigonometry math concept for a quiz that he was taking the next day. He did very well on it. As a parent, I have communicated with Stephanie via email and she has been clear in her communication and prompt to reply back. She is also always on time and makes use of every minute. These are amazing blessings for a busy family. We highly recommend Stephanie as tutor to anyone! She's really amazing!

In a Pinch and Always Perfect—Thank You, Stephanie!

Stephanie has been an incredible support to our family over the years. We first met her before the pandemic at the Redmond Library, where her deep knowledge of middle and high school math—and her friendly, professional demeanor—immediately stood out. Like many, we had to pause our lessons during COVID when the transition to online learning didn’t quite work for us. But a few months ago, we were able to reconnect, and it felt like picking up right where we left off. Stephanie came back into our routine with the same energy, patience, and insight we’d missed so much. One of the things we’ve always appreciated about her is her flexibility and dedication. On more than one occasion, we’ve reached out last-minute, sometimes in a bit of a panic, and she always managed to fit us in. Even after lessons ended, she was incredibly responsive—answering questions via email and text, sometimes late into the evening. Stephanie’s commitment to her students is clear in everything she does. She’s not just a math tutor; she’s a calm, steady presence who truly cares. We’re so grateful for her continued support and wouldn’t hesitate for a moment to recommend her.
