My tutored students improve their grades at school. My Home Schooled students discover success in their subjects. Tutoring offers me the opportunity to help students by assessing each one's strengths and using those to overcome any deficiencies. They learn to relate that which they already know, to that which they must understand. They learn the fundamentals and how to apply them to new and different questions. The students know I care deeply about them and their achievement of success.

My background includes 40 years of Engineering, Marketing, Management and Sales plus eight years after "retiring" teaching H.S. Physics and Math before beginning tutoring as a full-time profession. In addition to tutoring, I taught for 4 years, remedial classes in math (5th-6th grade level) and science (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) to Veterans at Cuyahoga Community College in Ohio. I left eight years ago so I could move to Redmond and be with my children and their families here.

I truly enjoy interacting with students, seeing them discover their capabilities and find lessons they thought were hard, aren't.

ACT English

ACT English

The student will be given strategies with which to attack each of the 5+ types of question found in the English section. For all ACT help, the student must be prepared to take practice tests or portions thereof between sessions with me. Questions missed will be explored and the reasoning behind correct answers explained. The student needs to have a previously unmarked copy of the latest edition of "The Real ACT Prep Guide" containing practice tests, bringing it to each session s/he has with me.
ACT Math

ACT Math

ACT math is quite straightforward, much like typical school math. It requires knowledge of at least algebra I and geometry, with some algebra II. The student will be shown an overall strategy, then several strategies based on the specific question type and the answers available. For all ACT help, the student must be prepared to take practice tests or portions thereof between sessions with me. Questions missed will be explored and the reasoning behind correct answers explained. The student needs to have a previously unmarked copy of the latest edition of "The Real ACT Prep Guide” containing practice tests, bringing it to each session s/he has with me.
ACT Reading

ACT Reading

I help the student discover which of 6 strategies best fits their cognitive processes and gains them the best score. This requires at least 8 sessions to be done thoroughly, but can be reasonably well accomplished in 4.
ACT Science

ACT Science

I help the student understand the structure of the test and the strategy students have used to significantly increase their scores on this section. I also help them with tactics that are successful - and guide them through the process. For all ACT help, the student must be prepared to take practice tests or portions thereof between sessions with me. Algebra 1

Algebra 1

My profile gives the background for my Algebra 1 expertise - BA in Physics, eight years teaching Algebra 1, 10 years tutoring it. Over the last four years I have successfully taught a home-schooled student from 5th grade Math through Algebra II. Many others in the past 10 years have seen my tutoring help them increase their Math grades at school. I can do the same for your student.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I taught 2 years in public school, 5 years in Parochial school and recently am teaching a home schooled student Algebra II. I follow the curriculum/book from which the student is being taught. I approach every lesson from whichever viewpoint the student can best understand.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

In addition to my BA in Physics and Teaching, I have gained graduate credit in tutoring/teaching phonics reading, basic writing and elementary math. For 10 years I have been tutoring K-6 students in math, phonics and basic writing (in addition to tutoring my H.S. and College students for their specific subjects). My education and experience in the Sciences have given me capability to highly successfully tutor/teach general science as well as the named sciences.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

As an ex H.S. Math teacher I am obviously versed in math from the rudiments onward. What is not so obvious is that when I began tutoring 10 years ago I was also trained in the methods of teaching young students these rudiments through the use of manipulatives and objects including "things", number cards, Cuisenaire rods, touch math, tables, flashcards, etc. I interact with the child to find "where they are", what interests them and how we can use this information to best help the child learn the math necessary for his/her age/grade level (and beyond).
Elementary Science

Elementary Science

My BA in Physics and 8 years teaching H.S. plus a career heavily connected to the sciences give me capability to tutor/teach general science as well as the named sciences. I designed and taught a remedial general science course to older veterans wishing to return to college at a Community College in Ohio for four years. It covered the basics of Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Re-education in teaching methods for younger students give me the ability to effectively help them. Over a recent four-year period I have successfully taught a home-schooled 5th-8th grade student general science, physical science, chemical science, and earth science (as well as math).
Geometry

Geometry

My profile gives the background for my Geometry expertise - BA in Physics, eight years teaching H.S. Geometry, 10 years tutoring it. Over the last six years I have successfully taught a home-schooled student from 5th grade Math through Algebra II. Many others in the past 10 years have seen my tutoring help them increase their Math grades at school. I can do the same for your student.
Phonics

Phonics

I have been trained in and tutored the phonic sounds of letters, blends, etc. along with combining sounds to form words. After graduate courses in teaching reading via phonics and syllabication, I have successfully tutored/taught 10 students, raising them from struggling to proficiency in their reading ability. My early learning non-readers have been able to begin to read after about 10 lessons. One struggling student, over two years, went from hating (refusing) to read to loving to read and ended leading her class in fluency. Another rose from first grade proficiency to third grade proficiency during third grade (a gain of two years in a single year). All advanced at least 150% each year.
Physical Science

Physical Science

I developed and successfully taught (4 years) a quick (25-hour) general science college survey course for adults covering physics, chemistry, and biology. I successfully tutor in these three subjects plus science at all grade levels. I feel confident I will help your student increase his/her understanding of Physical Science and improve his/her grades.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

My profile gives the background for my Pre-Algebra expertise - BA in Physics, 8 years teaching H.S. Pre-Algebra, 10 years tutoring it. Over the last 4 years I have successfully taught a home-schooled student from 5th grade level through Algebra II. Many others in the past 10 years have seen my tutoring help them increase their Math grades at school. I can do the same for your student.

SAT Math

SAT Math

SAT math requires "mathematical thinking" congruent with that found in most modern school content and tests aligned with Common Core Standards. In preparation, the student will be shown an overall strategy, then several strategies based on the specific question type and the answers available. For all SAT help, the student must be prepared to take practice tests or portions thereof between sessions with me. Questions missed will be explored and the reasoning behind correct answers explained.

Mr. P is simply wonderful

We've worked with Mr. P for nearly a year now but I didn't leave a review on every session just out of redundancy. They would have all been 5 stars though. He did a simply lovely job helping my 3rd grader excel in reading and he worked so well with her in math. Highly recommend.

Understanding and Patient

Mr. P. is a very patient and kind. He does not rush through a lesson. He makes sure that the student feels confident about the material before moving forward. He is very easy to get in contact with- whether it is by phone, email or text. My boys really like working with him since he is very understanding and easy to talk to.
