I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, a Master’s degree in Second Language Acquisition, Policy, and Culture, and a Graduate Certificate in TESOL. I am fluent in both Japanese and English and have extensive experience teaching languages and working with students from a variety of cultural and educational backgrounds. My teaching experience includes college and university level Japanese, Intensive English, and Cultural Awareness courses. I have taught students in both classroom and online settings, ranging from high school to college/university adult learners.
My approach to tutoring is supportive, practical, and tailored to each student’s goals and learning style. I believe students learn best when they feel comfortable making mistakes and asking questions, so I work to create a relaxed, encouraging environment while still providing clear structure and guidance. For language students, I focus on building confidence alongside vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, reading, writing, listening, and real-world communication skills. For students working on academic English or writing, I can help with organization, clarity, paragraph and essay development, and communicating ideas effectively rather than simply correcting mistakes for them.
Having learned and used both Japanese and English across different cultural settings, I understand many of the challenges that come with learning another language. I enjoy helping students make connections between language and culture and adapting my instruction to what works best for the individual student. Whether a student needs help with a college course, wants to become more comfortable speaking Japanese or English, or simply wants a patient and knowledgeable instructor to guide them, my goal is to make learning both productive and enjoyable.
