About Scooter

Is your child struggling in school? Are you homeschooling, but need some extra help in one or two subject? Does your child hate math, or science or English? Is reading a mystery to them? Do they not understand the explanations given by the teacher?

Let me help. According to one of my students (paraphrasing) I am better than any other math teacher he has ever had. I have helped students raise their grades from D's to A's. I have also taken children from non-readers to reading above grade level.

As both a certified teacher and an experienced homeschool mom, I know how to present subjects so the student can understand what they are to accomplish, how to proceed, and most important, why the work is important. I work well with children of all ages and make learning fun.

Tutoring sessions available in my home or yours. Flexible schedule.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I graduated with my BA in Elementary Education from the University of Missouri, Kansas City, in 1986 I am certified K-8 in Missouri and K-6 in Washington State. Since then I have been a substitute teacher, I taught English to students of all ages in Japan for a year, and I homeschooled my own children through high school. More recently, I have taught classes in a homeschool Parent Partnered program and for a large homeschool co-op group. In addition, I have run a summer math lab and am currently teaching General Science to a group of 6 students. I am happy to provide a copy of my teaching credentials.

The GED Test consists of five different components which require a broad base of knowledge:

Language Arts Multiple Choice
Essay Writing
Reading Comprehension

Over the years, I have taught all of these subjects. In addition, knowing how to study is as important as knowing what to study. I have the experience in helping students create study plans that help them succeed.

I am certified in K-8 and also have taught my own children to read using a strong phonics program. In addition to this, I have also tutored struggling readers using the same phonics program. I feel that phonics are neglected in the public schools leaving children without the skills necessary to become strong readers.

Very accessible and accommodating — Scooter was very helpful in tutoring me for the Math and some English portions of my Praxis test. She was very considerate of my schedule and genuinely cared about my success. The night before my exam she called me to teach me how to do a problem that was stumping the both of us during our last session together; I thought that was very considerate of her and did not expect such dedication. I wo ...
