About Sheila

My specialty is working with students who struggle with writing. I prefer the one-on-one relationship a tutor develops with a student. I have tutored people of all ages and abilities. I have worked with students at the community college, high school and middle school levels, and am currently tutoring adults who wish to gain confidence in their writing for educational and personal reasons. I have no expectations regarding what a student should already know, but instead enjoy the challenge of taking them from where they are to where they want to be. I believe the ability to express oneself in writing provides greater confidence in all aspects of life.

I work with people through the five stages of the writing process – developing ideas, organizing, writing, revising, editing- and have found that working through these individual steps helps students overcome anxiety and gain the ability to focus on conveying their ideas.

I recently began working with non-native English speakers and loved it so much I returned to school to earn my certificate to teach English to Speakers of Other Languages. I have worked with businessmen who want to improve their pronunciation skills for work and young students new to this country who want to speak English more confidently. I have learned a great deal from my ESOL students and love working with them.

I earned my Master of Arts in Teaching English at the State University of New York and my Bachelor of Arts in English from Colgate University. I earned my TESOL certification this year from Concordia University in Portland, Oregon. I am also a published author.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have a Master of Arts in Teaching English and my TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certification. I have worked with students of all ages and abilities. My sessions focus on the students' needs so I have helped high school students improve their English skills, college students complete their writing assignments and adults work on personal goals. I want my students to gain confidence and achieve the goals they have set for themselves.

ESL/ESOL

I have my Master of Arts in Teaching English and my TESOL certification. I love working with non-native speakers of all ages and abilities on their reading, writing, speaking and pronunciation skills.

Grammar

I earned my B.A. in English from Colgate University in Hamilton, New York and my M.A.T. in Secondary English from the State University of New York at Cortland. I have taught GED preparation classes and tutored at-risk students at the community college level.

Literature

I earned my B.A. in English Literature from Colgate University and my M.A.T. in English from the State University of New York at Cortland. I taught ninth grade English for a short time before accepting a position tutoring students at the community college. More recently I have worked with both high school students and college students to help them clearly express their thoughts in their school assignments. I am a writer and have a great love for literature.

Proofreading

Since the goal of most writing is communication, I believe it is very helpful to have other people read your work to make sure your message is clear. I have been a member of a writing group for almost twenty years and have found the constructive criticism invaluable. Also, since it is easy for writers to miss small grammatical errors when they proofread their own work, it is always a good idea to have someone help edit it. I have my M.A.T. in Secondary English and have worked with people of all ages and abilities on all aspects of the writing process - focusing ideas, organizing, writing, revising and editing. I have also published some works of fiction.

Writing

I enjoy working with people who struggle to put their thoughts on to paper. I see writing as a process and find that breaking it down into individual steps allows the writer to focus and not be overwhelmed. I believe gaining confidence in expressing one's ideas in writing transfers to greater confidence in many areas of life. I have worked with people of all ages and abilities including at-risk students at the community college level, GED students, high school students and adults who are writing for personal reasons. I have my M.A.T. in Secondary English and have published some works of fiction.

Great experience

Sheila was great on following up in a timely manner. She also was able to work with my schedule. Also she was resourceful, although I was unable to use whiteboard she worked with me on the phone and was patient. She made sure I understood why something was grammatically incorrect. I definitely look forward to working with her again.
