Are you looking for tips on how to play the saxophone in a fun way? Do you need help getting started, or are you curious about music theory?

I began my musical journey like many young musicians, joining the school band at the age of 8. For many years, I could only play when there were notes in front of me on a staff. However, everything changed when I started learning about music theory; it made so much more sense to me. It wasn't until later in my career that I discovered ear training, which allowed me to "jam" with other musicians. I've had the pleasure of playing saxophone in various bands across the country, and I would love to share some valuable tips I've picked up along the way—tips that I wish I had known when I started.

For the past 20 years, I’ve traveled with a nonprofit vaudevillian band that visits underprivileged communities, offering free workshops, potlucks, and shows. Throughout my time on tour, I have taught many beginning students, always creating a space for them to be expressive and feel safe. I believe there are no bad notes; it all depends on the next note you choose to play.

My teaching approach strikes a balance between learning to read music and the ability to improvise and jam with what isn’t written on paper, but rather what comes from within.

For the last decade, I’ve also played in various honk bands. In my current band, we welcome musicians of all skill levels—even those with no experience. I provide members of our community with lessons in basic music theory, performance awareness, and the opportunity to build confidence in their musical abilities.
