Hi! My name is Mary Ann. I enjoy tutoring young people and adults in math and Cantonese or Mandarin Chinese. I'm a fun and effective tutor, trying to make math and Chinese easy to understand and fun to learn.
I'm a native Chinese speaker, and I studied Chinese for fifteen years before I moved to the U.S. When I was a student at the University of Washington for my B.A. degree, I worked part-time in many hospitals as a Certified Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese Medical Interpreter. I was also tutoring young kids and adults in math and Chinese. Sometimes I volunteered in the Chinese elderly center teaching ESL (English as a Second Language).
I've been in the U.S. for over fifteen years, so I'm fluent in English. I'm friendly and patient. Although Chinese is a complicated language to speak and write, I always try to make it fun and easy to learn. I tutor math in the same way, trying to make math interesting. If you don't understand something, I can simplify it until you get it. With my experience in teaching math and Chinese, I believe you will enjoy learning any subject with my help.
Thanks in advance for considering me!

Mary Ann is the best tutor my son has worked with. She is well trained, intelligent, and inspirational. Mary Ann knows how to motivate and ask for my son's best effort, but she is also patient and understanding of his learning style and needs,
Mary Ann is completely reliable and thoroughly professional, and at the same time she is considerate and friendly.
My son and I have the utmost respect for Mary Ann and recommend her to the highest degree possible. I am a former school principal and have worked with and evaluated many teachers; both as an educational professional and as a parent I give Mary Ann the highest rating possible -- 100 out of 100.
When Mary first came to help me, I was doing pretty poorly in Algebra 2. By the end of the year, with her help, my math grade had gone up by two letter grades. Even when I was seriously struggling with a topic, she was always super patient and helped me understand what I was missing. If I could give 6 stars I would! I highly recommend!
Mary Ann is very helpful and takes the time to explain things that you need to know. I did more practice in basic Algebra, than what I expected. I look forward to having her from time to time during my studies with math.
Thanks to Mary Ann, my daughter in Honors Algebra no longer hates math. Doesn't love it, but so happy she doesn't hate it! Her confidence is back after just a couple of sessions.
Mary Ann is great with our daughter. She gives her the tools to learn and then do it on her own. She answers emails right away and is very easy to work with.
Flexible and attentive teacher. Focuses on what I need to to learn, adjusting her style and what we cover dynamically rather than a rote way of teaching.
We contacted Mary Ann in mid-February after learning our nephew was struggling with Pre-Calculus I, at the 6th week point of quarter, and borderline failing the class. We elected to work with Mary Ann based on her language background, skills, and credentials posted on WyzAnt.
While we did not personally observe the sessions she had with our nephew over a 4 week period from February to March, she consistently kept us updated after each session: learning progress, concepts reviewed, and homework assigned.
Her thoroughness in reviewing areas of deficiency allows her to make incremental adjustments in her weekly approach. She helped him shore-up on Algebra fundamentals with added exercises while going back on sections of Pre-Calculus he didn’t understand. This was all while keeping an eye on the upcoming quiz, 2nd mid-term, and the final exam.
We averaged 2-3 lessons per week at 1 ½ hrs - 2 hrs each during 4 weeks. With a closer eye on his understandings and follow-through with different exercises, the quizzes improved from 4/15 to 15/15 and the mid-term 64/100 increased to final 117/120. This enabled him to close out the quarter with an improved knowledge towards Pre-Calculus II.
Our conditions may be more severe than others due to our nephew's poor study habits and weak Algebra background. We learned that Mary Ann was able to bridge the gap, catch up, and help him turn the corner. She was dedicated throughout each tutoring session.
We are fortunate to have her working with our nephew, and she is continuing with him this quarter with Pre-Calc II…
Mary Ann has been helping my 9th grade daughter with geometry now for the past few months. She has a gentle, patient, approachable personality and style that I believe would put most students at ease. She is professional, consistently dependable, polite and always arrives on time and prepared to begin instruction at whatever point my daughter's needs dictate.
She provides follow up both before and after each session - keeping lines of communication open. My daughter's test scores and overall class grades have definitely improved since we began meeting with Mary Ann. The personalized math help has made the difference. I am happy to recommend Mary Ann as an excellent tutor!
Mary Ann is not only very helpful but is also very pleasant to work with. She was flexible with her schedule and helped me gain a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. She often offers another perspective on a particular matter than was covered in class, which was very beneficial.
Mary Anne is fabulous. Very positive, thorough and always on time. We feel so lucky to have her tutoring our sons.
Mary Ann has a very calm and sweet nature. These are wonderful traits for my daughter and her learning style. We met with Mary Ann twice for a total of 2 1/2 hours. This was enough to help my daughter raise her grade on a test retake in geometry by 55% (from 23% to 78%) I am sure that had she not made simple mistakes like not putting point zero after a whole number, she would have had a solid B on this test. We are very proud of our daughter and thrilled with Mary Ann as her tutor.
Kids are enjoying the lessons and seem to be making progress so far. Mary Ann is patient and provides good instructions to follow.
Mary Ann has been incredibly helpful for our young daughter. She's patient and very enthusiastic about both math and tutoring students. I hope to stay in contact with her for the rest of my daughter's high school career. Since starting tutoring, my daughter's grade in math has risen a whole letter grade and she feels generally more confident in the topic. I would highly recommend Mary Ann for anyone who has a student struggling with math.
My Son is in Middle school and strugles with Math. Mary Ann is very helpful and can talk to him at a level he understands and more importantly is able to retain. I am so thankful she does everything she can to fit us in when we have a last min. request for help.
Great tutor. She was able to fit my daughter in her schedule with a very short notice. Very accommodating and flexible. My daughter's confidence dealing with the subject has boosted. We are looking forward to working with her again. Thank you, Mary Ann.
The first thing that my son always says when he comes out of a lesson is "I like Mary Ann". He then proceeds to tell me how much he is learning and I'm very pleased. I highly recommend her to anyone.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
