Since graduating from college, I've spent 2 years working with elementary students, taught college algebra for 4 years to college students who struggled with foundational math (elementary math, prealgebra, algebra I, and algebra II), and 7 years tutoring and teaching one on one and small groups for their math classes (elementary-college) and math tests (ASVAB, ACT, SAT, GED).

Over the last 17 years, I have tutored elementary, middle, and high school, and college students with elementary math, basic math, pre-algebra, algebra I, algebra II, intermediate algebra, college algebra and more! I truly believe that math concept explanations can be catered to suit any individual's learning style and that math can become natural and intuitive for anyone! After students gain a thorough understanding of arithmetic and the basics of algebra, the math classes beyond that can be conquered with reasonable work and effort. Math doesn't have to be overwhelming - I will do my best to make complicated concepts understandable!

Please note: Algebra 1 and Algebra I are the same class just as Algebra 2 and Algebra II are the same class. Also Pre-algebra and Prealgebra are both correct ways to write the same class.

Accuplacer

Accuplacer

I have taught and tutored hundreds of teenage and adult students who were able to dramatically increase their math and Algebra abilities to be prepared to thrive in College Math and Algebra courses. The two Math Accuplacer tests (QAS and AAF) are measuring preparedness for these very classes. Additionally, I have experience teaching and tutoring statistics concepts, geometry concepts, trig identities, and story problems all of which come up on one or both of the Math Accuplacer tests. I have dedicated countless hours over the last 8 years to help hundreds of people find Math success on Accuplacer and/or college math course(s) so they can move forward with their education and career goals. It would be my pleasure to do the same for you! Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Over the last 17 years, I've taught and tutored students ages 10-60 years old in algebra classes including Prealgebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Intermediate Algebra, and College Algebra. During this time, I've helped nearly 1000 students understand and succeed in Algebra! Algebra I covers core math concepts and processes that are used in Algebra II, College Algebra and other future Math classes. Understanding these concepts is key for future math success. I teach these topics and processes in ways that are engaging, simple, and memorable. I help make these concepts easy to understand and even intuitive so that when Algebra I is complete, each student becomes confident and prepared for Algebra II. Please note: Algebra 1 and Algebra I are the same class just as Algebra 2 and Algebra II are the same class.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

Over the last 17 years, I've taught and tutored students ages 10-60 years old in algebra classes including Prealgebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Intermediate Algebra, and College Algebra. During this time, I've helped nearly 1000 students understand and succeed in Algebra! Algebra II covers concepts that build on the core Algebra principles learned in Prealgebra and Algebra I. The concepts and problem types encountered in Algebra II, often require more steps to solve and have more challenging components than Prealgebra and Algebra I. I teach these topics and processes in ways that are engaging, simple, and memorable. Additionally, I know how to fill any gaps in previous Prealgebra and Algebra I understanding along the way. I have helped hundreds of student learn and understand Algebra II principles while strengthening, re-learning, and even learning basic math and Prealgebra and Algebra I concepts at the same time! I am passionate about helping anyone and everyone build math confidence and understanding so they can thrive in Algebra II so they increase their problem solving skills and move closer to their academic and career goals! Please note: Algebra 2 and Algebra II are the same class just as Algebra 1 and Algebra I are the same class.
ASVAB

ASVAB

I scored extremely high on the ASVAB and have helped dozens of others exceed the scores they need including one student who scored a 98! I specialize in tutoring the Math Knowledge and Arithmetic Reasoning sections of the ASVAB. (But I also have created study plans, recommended resources, and provided accountability in studying for the Paragraph Comprehension and Word Knowledge sections. This has helped students maximize their improvement on the main ASVAB score (the AFQT score)! I have created an outline, developed a flexible tutoring curriculum, and compiled and created hundreds and hundreds of practice problems that cover the math concepts needed for the ASVAB. I have worked with students who have begun at all different math starting points. I give each of my ASVAB students personalized guidance so they can exceed the scores they need on the ASVAB so they can start their military careers in the Air Force, Navy, Marines, and Army! My teaching method focuses on core math concepts and skills needed for the ASVAB. By doing this I am able to help students better understand, make quick progress, and build confidence. Many ASVAB prep books and programs focus on concepts and problems types much deeper and harder than the ASVAB does. (Often about 2 years of math beyond what is necessary.) This approach leads to students wasting a lot of time (and money in many cases) and typically gives worse results because it is confusing and overwhelming which minimizes progress. I’m here to help you learn in the most simple, memorable, and empowering way possible to help you make the very most of your time and money and ultimately move toward your career goals!
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I am passionate about explaining math simply and guiding students toward key connections, strengthening number sense, and understanding of core concepts. (Since I have extensive experience teaching and tutoring algebra from prealgebra through college algebra, I guide students through elementary math with knowledge and perspective of what concepts and skills will be most vital in future classes.) My approach leads to strong math foundations that set students up to understand and excel in future math classes. Over the last 13 years, I have taught and/or tutored 3rd grade math, 4th grade math, 5th grade math, and 6th grade math. I've loved seeing them build understanding, confidence, and skill! Whether your child needs some support outside of class or a homeschool math teacher, it would be my pleasure to help your child thrive as well!
Homeschool

Homeschool

I have taught math classes to a variety of grades/ages (see profile if you'd like more details). I also have some Language Arts teaching and tutoring experience so while I will mainly focus on teaching homeschool math, I can also teach and tutor some in that area as well. Additionally I was home schooled for 3 years so I have experience from the student's perspective and I have some first hand experience with homeschool benefits, challenges and curriculums!
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

Over the last 17 years, I've taught and tutored students ages 10-60 years old in algebra classes including Prealgebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Intermediate Algebra, and College Algebra. During this time, I've helped nearly 1000 students understand and succeed in Algebra! I teach Prealgebra topics and processes in ways that are engaging, simple, and memorable. I help make these concepts easy to understand and even intuitive so that when Prealgebra is complete, each student is confident and prepared for future Algebra I and other future Math classes. Please note: Prealgebra is usually taught in 7th grade math or 8th grade math. Though occasionally it is taught in 6th grade math. Also Pre-algebra is another way to correctly write the same course name.

It was my pleasure to help help your daughter make the key connections she was missing with Algebra I and Algebra II concepts so she was set up to thrive in the rest of her Algebra II class!

Highly recommend without hesitation!

My two children have had the absolute pleasure of working with Melissa for the past five + years, and I can confidently say she is an exceptional math tutor. Her deep knowledge of the subject is matched by her patient, calm, and encouraging presence. She has a natural ability to meet each child exactly where they are — intuitively recognizing their learning style and adjusting her approach to support and challenge them in just the right way. She's incredibly organized and always comes prepared, making every session productive and engaging. She is a dependable and professional teacher who has become a steady and trusted presence in our children's academic life. The growth we've seen, both in math skills and confidence, has been remarkable. We feel so lucky to have found her!

ASVAB preparation perfection!

I started from zero with almost no knowledge going into ASVAB prep, and thanks to Melissa’s help, I ended up scoring a 92. She was patient, clear, and incredibly effective at breaking things down in a way that made sense. I couldn’t have done it without her. If you’re serious about improving your score, she’s the one you want on your side.

Congratulations on your amazing ASVAB score and having the choice of whatever job in the Marines you decide on! I’m glad I was able to guide you to a much stronger math foundation and sharper problem solving skills. Additionally it was my pleasure to teach you many pre-algebra, algebra I, algebra II, and geometry concepts for the first time. Without your hard work and commitment, learning so much math in a short time wouldn’t have been possible!

Great help Patient, kind and efficient

It was my pleasure to help your kid better understand the 4th grade math, 5th grade math, and 6th grade math concepts her review homework included! After some guidance she caught on quickly!

Knowledgeable

The first was great to build foundational concepts. We worked on the basics of adding, subtracting and multiplication Looking to see how we can build on this. Part 2 is 3/10.

I enjoyed working with you and helping you quickly strengthen your elementary math foundational. Then helping you understand and thrive with many concepts from prealgebra, algebra 1, algebra 2, and geometry. Congratulations on exceeding the scores you needed on the ASVAB and AFQT and starting the Air Force career you wanted!

Intuitive and thorough

Melissa connected well to my 12 yr. Old son and was able to throughly adjust lesson and homework as needed on the spot. Great communication with me as well. She is kind and patient.

I loved teaching your son math for 1.5 school years and helping him go from a late 3rd grade math to an 8th grade math level (pre-algebra) using a combination of resources I compiled and/or created and the math curriculums on IXL. His math skills & abilities, number sense, logical reasoning, and confidence truly transformed in that time! Completely covering 4th grade math, 5th grade math, 6th grade, and 7th grade math in 1.5 years is an impressive feat you should both be proud of!

So amazing!!

Melissa was able to connect with my 16 year old, resistant to a tutor son!!! Bravo!! We now have a standing date with her!! Thank you Melissa. Please take out the 160 minimum that will stop me in the future.
