My choice in becoming a tutor comes from a lifelong love of learning and teaching, particularly in the math and science areas. I have a decade of experience in biotechnology and laboratory management. I trained scores of entry level technicians to understand and perform highly technical processes. During my years in this industry I always found myself naturally gravitating toward the educational aspects of my job. I loved training new employees and helping position them for successful careers. I have been blessed with the unique skill of being able to communicate difficult concepts in an easy to understand and fun way.

In addition, I absolutely LOVE math. Excelling at math opens so many doors for students. It teaches them to think clearly and analytically. Too often, however, we hear of students who start off doing well in math in elementary school, only to experience falling grades and a loss of interest at the middle or high school levels. I believe very strongly that this decline in grades and/or interest is due mainly to small gaps in their learning that, over the years, creates a weak foundation in their understanding. My job will be to identify these gaps and help your student fill them in while continuing to stay on track with their classwork.

Students learn best when they are in a safe and caring environment. At some point they may encounter a teacher that they can't connect with, or may feel intimidated to ask questions in class. From experience, I know that these types of issues can cause a great deal of stress at home. Having raised two children in our local public school system I found great ways to resolve these issues that brought peace back into our home, and I would love to share them with you.

I am a confidence builder. That's my goal with every session - to make your student feel good about themselves and their own abilities!

ACT Math

ACT Math

The math section of the ACT test is a one-hour test with sixty questions. It requires less reading comprehension than it's SAT counterpart, but it does have more trigonometry. I start off by giving my students a full, timed ACT math practice test. This helps me to determine which areas need more practice and if there are any test anxiety issues. I also love helping my students find time-saving ways to move through the test more quickly and confidently come exam time.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is one of my favorite subjects. It's often referred to as a "gatekeeper" subject, meaning it opens doors for the student to higher levels of math. Algebra 1 is a language we use to describe patterns in a very simple manner. It's a beautiful shorthand that allows us to perform repetitive processes or calculations in one easy step!
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

In algebra 2 the student learns advanced algebraic tools and how to apply them to the world around us. New topics are introduced in algebra 2, such as logarithms, conic sections, matrices, and imaginary and complex numbers. These advanced topics are so much fun to learn, but they take more focus and concentration on the student's part. My approach to teaching algebra 2 is to show the student how the formulas are derived, rather than just how to plug numbers into them. In this way, the student comes away with greater confidence and success in solving the problems.
Genetics

Genetics

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, and a Ph.D. in Genetics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. During my 12 years working in biotech, I performed testing for hereditary cancers in a clinical lab setting and ended up managing several laboratories. I set up the training programs for new lab staff and was the one chosen to translate laboratory operations between the scientific departments of the company and the business development/sales and marketing departments. I also attended many national and some international biotech conferences where I presented abstracts, workshops, and seminars.
Geometry

Geometry

Through geometry, we learn to describe and measure the size, shape and position of figures in space. This is the branch of math where the student learns to think and visualize objects in three dimensions. It's a whole different animal than algebra, so some students struggle with this shift in their thinking process.
ISEE

ISEE

I've been tutoring the two math portions of the upper level SSAT and the ISEE for several years. My approach is to first identify conceptual gaps and address them, then to build their confidence by taking practice tests so they can see their scores improve. Lastly we work on speed and test taking strategies. My students have all gotten into their choice schools.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I think that Pre-algebra is very important for developing a strong foundation to excel in the higher levels of math (Algebra, Geometry, and Calculus). I will make sure my students fully understand the Pre-algebra concepts that are often considered difficult, such as the difference between proportional and linear relationships. My style of teaching math is to take a difficult problem and show my student how to deconstruct it into smaller, easy-to-understand concepts. Once a student learns how to approach problems this way, he/she will gain the confidence to tackle even the toughest problems and have fun doing it!
Precalculus

Precalculus

Pre-calculus consists of the subjects and skills needed to understand calculus. It involves algebra, trigonometry, coordinate geometry, and lots and lots of functions. Having a strong foundation in pre-calculus is crucial for mastering the fundamentals of calculus. I tutor pre-calculus at both the high school and community college level.
SAT Math

SAT Math

The math section of the new SAT consists of two sections, a 25 minute, 20 question section where a calculator is not allowed, and a 55 minute, 38 question section where calculators are allowed. I start off by giving my student a full, timed, practice SAT math test. The results of this practice test helps me to determine which concepts need improvement and whether there are any test taking anxiety issues. I also love teaching my students time saving strategies to help them move through the problems more quickly and confidently!
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is a very interesting branch of mathematics that's used in astronomy and navigation. With it we can find relationships between the angles and sides of a triangle. It requires some memorization in the beginning, but once that's achieved it's easy to solve the problems in a simple and logical manner.

Amazing!!

What can I say-but Marga has been an amazing asset for our family!!! We started looking for a tutor for our senior, who was struggling with Algebra 2, as we wanted to ensure she graduated on time. We found Marga through WyzAnt and our experience has been amazing!! Marga has worked with our daughter for the last several months and with her assistance, my daughter has not only passed her Algebra 2, but has passed with an A. And more importantly, will be graduating on time. Marga exhibits consistency, patience, excellent communication skills, as well as being very personable. She has instilled confidence in my daughter that has not only impacted her math grade, but her other grades as well. My daughter is very proud of her accomplishments, an emotion that she doesn't always feel. Hands down, would recommend Marga to anyone in need of assistance in the math discipline. I can't thank her enough for the work she has done with our daughter.

Simply the Best!

My daughter had many tutors over the last few years and none have even come close to Marga. She knows my child is a visual learner and teaches her in a way my daughter can understand. Her grade significantly improved and I am so grateful to have found Marga! To see the confidence my daughter now has not only in math but in general is amazing.
